what's the win2k equivilant utility to fdisk, and how do I get to it? I obviosly can't use plain old fdisk becuase win2000 isn't DOS based...

Thanks,

Hammie

If you intend to use FAT32, then you should be fine using a win 98 boot disk and running fdisk from it. Note that the reverse doesn't work, a disk formated under w2k won't work with win9x; microsoft seems to have changed some things.

what if I want to use NTFS? The only reason I could see for using FAT32 is if I dual boot with win9x, and if I did that, I'd still have DOS around to use fdisk.

In the start menu, under administrative tools theres a util called computer management.

In there there's a disk drives section - this allows you to format and partition drives using a nice Graphical interface.

And any disk formatted as fat16 or fat32 works fine in win98.

yes, I've seen that, but I assumed that it wouldn't work on my windows drive. Win98 didn't let me do anything to my main drive while windows was running. Is win2k different? Will it let me format my windows drive while I'm running windows?

No, Win2K will not let you mess around with your "System" partition. It will however let you mess around with any other partition or drive in your system.

If you need to change your system partition you will want to use partition magic 5.0 as you can resize NTFS and FAT32 partitions as well as convert between the 2 different file systems.

Other then that, the Win2K setup is the other place you can change your system partition on install.

O.K. Maybe this'll help. Without special utilities (like Partition Magic) you can't alter "the partition containing the installation files of the OS you are currently operating in" [read: "system partition"]. I.E. you can't format your C: drive if you installed Win98 to C:\windows and you are currently running Win98. (The same applies to any other OS.) Hence the need to either 1) Boot to a DOS/Win98 diskette with the necessary utilities, or 2) Run in another OS on a different partition and then fool with the partition.

Here's a few helpful tips for partition management (w/o using a 3rd party partitioning tool like Partition Magic):

*Win98 FDisk - Only creates/deletes FAT16 or FAT32 partitions. Cannot alter NTFS partitioins.

*Delpart (freeware DOS tool) - Can delete FAT16/FAT32/NTFS partitions.

*You can only create NTFS partitions during the NT/W2K installation process, or after it has been installed using the process described by cxg.

If you have Partition Magic, you can do just about anything you want. Word from the now wise: Create a PM recovery disk if you know what's good for you.

Hopefully this helps you...

Okay I'm comming in a bit late, But... If I understand the Question You want to convert the System/Home partition for win2k to NTFS, Without loosing anything, right?

Go to the DOS/Command Prompt (I'm assumeing Win2k's on C:)
and type convert C: /fs:NTFS
Press enter
It willgive you a message that says "Can't do this while Windows is running ,would you like to proform conversion on next boot? y/n"
Hit Y
Press enter
reboot

I did this on a Win2k Server yesterday
