Fedora 64bit and Ubuntu 12.04 64bit sees only 7.8GiB when i have 8GB.

Hello, I recently using Ubuntu 12.04 64bit and i like it.

Windows and memtest86 both are saying i have 8155MB for full use. And windows say i have 8gb on computer properties.

Ubuntu says i have 7.8GiB in system monitor. I also booted Fedora 64bit live cd and it says the same thing.

Why?? As far as i can tell, there is nothing wrong with my memory.
I also use a dedicated GPU, so no igp is stealing my memory.

How much ram memory having you all in system monitor?
Does it also display less memory than in windows or memtest? Assuming you have no igp.

I am really worried since this is a new pc.

The strange this is: with the 32bit version of ubuntu i see 7.9gb vs 7.8 with 64bit ubuntu.
Why??

This is normal for Linux, don't worry about it.

has to do with the way its reporting counted bytes, not how much is physically there or usable.

Microsoft uses:
windows generally uses the convention 1KB=1024 bytes, while unix derivatives use 1KB=1000 bytes. Just a different way of reporting how much is there, like inches/centimeters... both measure the same distance!

Aha, but why is ubuntu 32bit reporting 7.9GiB and ubuntu 64bit reporting 7.8GiB
I could understand the difference between linux and windows. But ubuntu? with its 32 and 64 bit?...

So the 64bit version of Ubuntu reserves more memory by the system. Interesting.

In the 64-bit environment INT types (for example) are longer and therefore require more memory. On average expect memory useage in a 64-bit environment to be roughly 30-50% higher than in 32-bit space.
