[SOLVED] Feedback on this build

Hi everyone,

As I've just finished university I'm looking at switching out my desktop for a newer one. I was wondering if anyone might be willing to give me some feedback on this build!
I'm located in Canada, and my budget is somewhat flexible but I'd rather not go much higher than $1200-$1500 (incl. taxes). The PC will be used for playing games, but also for music stuff. (Recording/editing, electronic music production, etc). I'm currently using Propellerhead Reason and might want to learn something like Ableton or Pro Tools later.

Specifically, I was wondering if the psu I've selected is solid, or if there's a better one I could go for. Also, if anyone has recommendations for components that would save me a little (SSD, RAM, etc). I'd appreciate it.

Um, you've picked a hilariously overpriced GPU, about double what they go for. 1660Ti is about $400 for a decent one. I think you may have flipped the pricing option there. I'd go with this one:

PSU choice is okay. No price on it, so hard to compare it to other options.

Corsair RM650 is $150 CAD, not bad.
Corsair RM650x at $160 is my usual choice for a decent PSU.

All said, if you were willing to pay that much, this whole thing could be done differently.

Is that asus mobo 3rd gen ready? If not you'll need a bios update. Unsure if that board has a bios flash ability without a cpu.

Other than that seems solid, minus the 850 1660ti that eximo mentioned.

Thanks for your reply! You're right about the GPU, I should have mentioned I only included it because I found the same card for significantly cheaper (Less $400). And I'll look into those power supplies.

I'm curious, do you think the 1660ti and 3600x will be ok with a 1440p monitor? A friends selling one cheap.

I don't think it is, I had some trouble finding other decent mATX boards in my price range though. Any recommendations?

For 1440p, CPU yes all day. The 1660ti will have you lowering settings to medium or low to hit 60 in most newer AAA titles. For 1440p You'd ideally want at least a 2060S. but the 1660ti will work.

I also dont think the 3600x is worth the near $50 difference in price. I'd stick with the 3600.

I suppose the 3600X does include a somewhat better cooler though, which could keep the system a bit quieter under load, which might be useful for music production. Of course, for that price difference, it might be worth grabbing the 3600 and putting the money toward a mid-range aftermarket tower cooler, which should be notably quieter than either stock cooler option. It does look like that case might be a bit limited in terms of maximum cooler height though, which appears to be just 150mm, which might cut out some popular mid-range options like the Hyper 212 Black. Performance-wise, you are unlikely to notice a difference between the 3600 and 3600X, as there shouldn't be much more than a couple percent difference between them.

Watch some of the reviews of the 1660ti models by hardware unboxed. They have nice charts at both 1080 and 1440. You'll get a better idea of actual performance in game. They may have even tested games you know you'll play.

Even with the better cooler, I still don't think it's worth $50. For something like music production, I'd assume a nice set of headphones is already in use?

You might also consider the RTX 2060 (non-SUPER). Those cards should perform roughly in-between a 1660 Ti and a 2060 SUPER (typically more than 15% faster than a 1660 Ti), with prices starting only a little higher than what those sell for...

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I really appreciate it. The 2060/2060 super is tempting but I'm not sure I can stretch for it. What I think I'll do is start buying the parts that I know I'll use (the 3600 for example, or the RAM) and then wait to see what goes on sale... Maybe if I find a good price on a 2060 I'll grab it, otherwise I'll probably stick with the 1660ti.
