Question Female 6-pin to male 8-pin adapter?

I am using a 6+8 pin powered GTX 1070 right now but am planning on upgrading my GPU soon (either to a second-hand 1080 Ti or a new 2080). Some of the models I'm considering are dual 8-pin powered; would it be possible (and safe) to use a female 6-pin to male 8-pin adapter on one of those? I ask because my PSU is semi-modular and the hardwired GPU cable is 6+8 pin; going modular with a dual 8-pin cable is possible, but I'd have the hardwired 6+8 pin cable in addition to the dual 8-pin cable taking up space in my case behind the right panel which is already filled to the brim. It'd require a lot of work to finesse the extra space in there, which is why if I wind up with a dual 8-pin GPU, I'd rather use a 6-to-8 pin adapter to power it if that's possible and safe.
