Hi, I've had a 19' CRT Samsung SyncMaster 955DF for the past 20 years now and I'm about ready to upgrade to something more modern. Specifically this monitor: https://www.amazon.ca/LG-24MK600M-B...+-+24MK600M-B&qid=1560288032&s=gateway&sr=8-3

I've done a lot of research but I figured there was no harm in asking a few questions here to be more confident in my choice. First off, I only play single-player games so I'm hoping a 75hz Refresh Rate with 5 ms (GtG) at 1080p Max will be sufficient for my gaming needs. I looked into 144hz monitors but the panels for those all seem to be TN and according to my research, IPS is the best way to go for color and accuracy. Also, I like to play older and newer games, mostly adventure with some RPG, RTS, 4X, Fighting and a few Third Person Shooters thrown in as well.

Second, when I'm surfing the net or word processing, I'm used to keeping my desktop at 1024x768 with 85hz Refresh Rate to avoid squinting and eye strain. Could this become an issue with only 75hz Refresh Rate or will the increased monitor size, brightness and being more modern than a 20 year old CRT likely negate any differences? I don't mind playing 1080p games or watching 1080 videos at 75hz, I just don't want my eyes crying for mercy when I'm not. ;P

Finally, I currently have a GTX Video Card (which I'm planning to upgrade later in the year along with my computer) and this particular monitor has Free-Sync but not G-Sync. I've read that Nvida cards are compatible with Free-Sync but not with HDMI ports, which is all this monitor has. Or does none of that matter if I'm only going to be gaming at 1080p?

Any help or advice you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

My current setup:

Computer: i3 540 3.07Hz (Thinking of upgrading to an i7 9700k)
GPU: EVGA GTX 960 SC 2GB (Thinking of upgrading to a Zoltac RTX 2060 6GB)
RAM: 8GB (Thinking of upgrading to 16GB)
PSU: XFX TS 550w 80 Plus Gold
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (Thinking of upgrading to Windows 10 Home 64-bit)

The LG monitor you linked is a good choice for what you're doing. IPS is the way to go if you love vivid colors and pictures. The high refresh rate TN panels are quite expensive and 144Hz is only good you're getting into serious gaming.

The monitor you are looking at has Flicker-Free built into it. Basically, the screen does not flicker when the monitor is on. Old LCD and cheap LCD screens do this. It does not matter if the refresh rate is 85Hz or 75Hz, as long as the Flicker-Free feature is present in the monitor, your eye's won't strain as much. My monitor has this and I have almost zero eye strain. Also, it's not really necessary to go to 75Hz, as it's hard to tell the difference between 60Hz and 75Hz. Try the monitor in 60Hz first...

As for Free-Sync/G-Sync, those are their to eliminate screen tearing. NVIDIA card are not compatible with free-sync in general, so you won't be taking advantage of it. If screen tearing is an issue, turning on V-sync would be better than nothing. Since you are upgrading, I would strongly suggest an AMD card to take advantage of the Free-Sync monitor.

So overall, it's a great monitor.
