You can still put the 9800 in it if its a 4x motherboard. 8x AGP is all
hype, just about anywhere you look, opinions and facts state that there
is zero gaming performance improvement 8x vs. 4x. Some other graphics
applications may take advantage of it but even then I've never heard
anything definitive.
The only problem with an old motherboard is what CPU you've got in it.
If you're not running at 3 GHz or AthlonXP 3200 speed you may need some
more horse power.

So I'd tell your wife you need to upgrade to an Athlon64 3200, an
nForce3 Motherboard, 1Gb PC3700 RAM, and 4 new 10,000 rpm SATA 72 Gb HDD.

But really you should wait for boards that support PCI Express, or
you'll be needing a new motherboard the next time a new card comes out.

bit over the top to be honest....an amd 2400 will be nice with decent
ram...the card bottle necks other wise with the fsb on the mobo...however 4x
and 8x agp is bullshit ..there is hardly any difference...i tried both.

My cpu is a p4 1.8 overclocked to 2.2

So did you put the 9800 in the 4x motherboard or not?
I'm running an Athlon XP 2500 @ 2.2 GHz w/ 9800 Pro on an nForce2 Mobo
w/ 1Gb RAM @ DDR370.
If you've got decent RAM you could get a good nForce2 board for ~$80 and
an Mobile XP 2500+ (which overclock really well) for $90 USD, which
would be worthwhile. People get those Mobile Bartons up to 2.5 GHz
without too much extravagant cooling (running at that speed they can
outclass some of the Hammers).
I don't know what to recommend for Intels.

Yes, it runs Farcry very well, exept on the lava level.

Thx for the input Inglo.
But I guess I'll wait with the mobo since AGP 4x VS 8x aint that big.
And since iD dont use big rooms/space in their games, I think (hope) my
system will run it good.
I will upgrade to 1gb ram tho, I only have 512 now

Probably a good call since as you say running the 8x card at 4x card
won't make *that* much of a difference. Also PCI-express cards are
starting to come onto the market so it might be worth holding off a mobo
upgrade (that said there is always some next big thing in computing... 😉).

The nforce2 with a Mobile XP cpu won't set you back that much, as you
can see here:
