Fighter PV bonuses

I'm currently playing a dwarven fighter. He's level 10 at the moment, so
he should be getting a 7% bonus to PV gained from any PV-granting item
that is represented with a '['. I have a total of 17 points of PV: 2
points from Toughness (verified by stripping all my armour off), and 15
points from armour:

Head : hood [+0, +0]
Neck : -
Body : chain mail (-1, -3) [-3, +5]
Girdle : adamantium girdle [+0, +3]
Cloak : cloak of protection [+0, +3]
Right Hand : battle axe (+0, 1d6+2)
Left Hand : tower mithril shield (-2) [+9, +2]
Right Ring : -
Left Ring : -
Bracers : -
Gauntlets : gauntlets (-1, +0) [+0, +1]
Boots : heavy boots [-1, +1]
Missile weapon: -
Missiles : bundle of 4 drakish scurgari (+2, 1d8+4)
Tool : -

Now, 7% of 15 appears to be 1.05. So, shouldn't my 17 PV be 18? The
special abilities screen has seen it fit to screw around with me as well:

"Due to your excellent armor knowledge you are able to utilize the
protective powers of armor more efficiently (by +7% for a +0 bonus)."

Argh.

So am I missing something here?

Looking at your items, you have +15 PV from ['s. 7% of 15 is 1.05.

2 PV from Toughness.

15 base PV + 2 PV Toughness + 1.05 PV from Bonus = 18 PV.

Its 9:30am. I cant see the problem. ADOM likes screwing with people.

Oh, but ADOM wasn't giving me 18 PV; it was giving me 17 PV. I guess it
was early when you posted this. :)

I have that nasty feeling that ADOM counts bonuses individually for
each PV granting item. That way the bonus would kick in, if you had
a single item granting at least +15 PV.

That's what I suspected. In that case, good thing I was playing a dwarf,
since the only way you could take advantage of such a useless bonus is
by smithing, if you can even smith your stuff up enough to get more than
one or two points. Or you can wear moloch armour, fiddle-dee-dee. And
you can hope your smithed-up armour doesn't get punched into destruction
or dissolved by an acid trap.

In my mind, it amounts to 3 of the fighter's class powers being next to
useless to an average player (not so much with a dwarf but still a pain
in the ass). Anyway, that dwarf got petrified last night (chopping a
gorgon cowardly, got hungry, started eating, got blasted mid-meal (DV
was about 72)). Two acid traps on one level had brought my PV from 17
down to 10, but I got it back up, oh yes I did. Bloody RNG.

I know, I know... I have to start writing with less apparent conviction,

That can't be right, as I've got extra PV from the skill. It is almost
useless until level 18, though.

The skill only applies to the PV gained from certain items, but all
your gear seemed legitimate. Strange rounding error?

Hmm... if you happen to have a .*lg of one of your fighters lying
around, it might help if we took a look at it.

On the subject of fighters, does anyone else notice they're really,
REALLY poorly designed? They are truly a terrible class. I contend
they ought to have "healing" by default. Why do wizards get healing,
and fighters do not? Isn't it just sad that a wizard could easily kill
a fighter *even without magic*? It's like by "fighter" Thomas Biskup
actually meant "figher in the sense of a very low echelon conscripted
soldier", rather than the more conventional "heroic warrior" sense.

Actually, I just achieved my first-ever ultra ending with a drakeling
fighter, after many, many failed attempts with other classes. He was an
absolute monster by the end of the game. Don't know if it's the
exception that proves the rule or what, but in my opinion they start
with a very strong skill set and the PV bonus can be decent in the
endgame.

I agree, I had my second win with a fighter, but man it was a struggle.
Their class powers are garbage. I found they really struggle at all
stages of the game. They would be awesome if the PV bonus was based on
their cumulative PV, instead of PV per individual Item.

Im working on a YAVP with a hurthling monk right now, wish me luck!
