File associations corrupted beyond belief.

My file associations are corrupt, and pretty extensively I think. I have tried a couple of different solutions such as just setting my default programs (itunes and word don't pop up), associating a file type to a program (.docx to Word and .mp3 to iTunes), and setting program access and computer defaults (going to the custom tab and changing the default media player has no avail, it just changes back to the default media player immediately after clicking OK). I have even browsed for the .exe extension of each file extensions respective program and opened it in windows explorer and still nothing (for example WINWORD.exe for .docx files).

Each time I try to open up iTunes, it prompts me with the message about how it is not the default player of media files. I have even disabled the option for it to cease prompting me with the message about it not being the default player of media files and it still continues to do it. The same happens with Microsoft Word. Also, each time I open up word it prompts me with an installation and configuration process. After it's done, it prompts me stating that it is not the default program for viewing and editing documents and asks me if I would like to change it. When I click yes, nothing happens.

I also attempted a .mp3 registry fix for my default audio player and nothing happened. I have no idea what to try for Word since I cannot find a file extension registry fix for it.

Should I just reformat?
