so the title basically explains it all, im not sure if it started because of my usb but i only noticed the freeze when i opened a pic in my USB

so i restarted and tried my pictures that are already on the computer and they froze file explorer also

not sure how to fix this since i only found threads relating to windows 10 file explorer crashing

First what program is your computer using to try and "open" the pictures? Right-click on a picture file and then choose Open with > and a sub-menu should appear and see what other programs you have that can open a jpg/png.

Another thing to try - open that program first - then use the File > Open menu to try and open a picture file - does it still "crash" explorer?

just selecting the image in file explorer makes it crash even videos crash

using other software and opening them from the software seems to work tho
i think its just file explorer being shit
winrar is also crashing when selecting something picture or video

well that would be hard considering i have 5 tb of data....

Get a 120GB SSD (under $50 now) - and make that your C (OS) drive, and your other drives save for data. As long as all the other components in your system stay the same (mainly the motherboard) - you can connect the SSD - disconnect your Data - and do the Win10 install using the same Key and after it's installed, attach your data drive back up and should be good to go (make sure motherboard BIOS settings has the SSD set to boot before any other HD's)

wouldent i end up with 2 windows 10 installs? and are you sure this is the only way? im sure that a problem that stems out of nothing dosent have only 1 solution

From everything you say, it is your Windows 10 install that is messed up. It will need a Reset, or a fresh install. Those "can" be done without losing your data, but it's always a good plan to back it up / copy it onto a separate drive in case Windows decides it need to wipe the drive completely.

One thing I learned way back in the early 90's with 3.1 and NT - always keep your data on a separate drive than your OS - just in case your OS crashes. From floppys to the iomega zip drives to CD-R's to SD Multimedia to USB Flash to now 1 TB 2.5" external drives - I try to tell everyone I work with - always keep a backup copy on something NOT inside the computer. Since you have so much data - does that mean you have a huge 6 TB or 8 TB drive in your computer and had the OS and your data all on the same drive?

would recovery>reset this pc
work? it says it becomes like when you first got it but still has the same files?

I will look later (not at a Windows 10 computer at the moment) but there should be a fix which won't require a clean install of Windows. I had a similar problem with Windows 7. The fix had something to do with turning off thumbnails or some type of image preview. It didn't matter what type of image it was as Explorer would crash as soon as I tried to open an image.

yeah that dosent work on windows 8 to 10 anymore
