File permissions keep changing back to Read Only

Hello,

I have a tough one for all of you if you think you can answer it.

We have home directories on a Windows Server 2003 file server. We are running Active Directory. Our users report that they can create a file in the home directories on the file server, but when they come back to open the file again, they get a "Read Only" message for the file.

Mind you, this only occurs on Windows Product files, i.e., .doc, .xls, .mdb, etc.

This does not occur with .rtf, or .csv, etc. The users can copy the file, rename it and work on that in the home directory, but it will also shortly become read only once they exit the file.

Just a note, each user has "Full Control" with NTFS, and Full Control on the share permissions. None of them are denied in any other group. We setup another file server, gave unlimited access for test users, and they also started reporting the same issue on the test server.

I personally removed the check box from a folder for read only, just to have it reapplied after I refreshed the display.

We do have Norton AV on the production server, but not the test server. We have Veritas installed for the network, but no agent is installed on the test server.

A final note, we contacted Microsoft for tech assistance on this matter, only for them to give up and refund our money for the session!

Well if it happens on a test server as well as the production one, I'd look
to the workstation clients as the source of the problem.

Are the file attributes marked read only?

Is the creator owner listed in the permissions for the folder on the security page or
in advanced permissions? If it is make sure that it has at least modify permissions.
If it is not listed, try to add it with modify permissions to see if it makes a
difference. --- Steve
