I've been uploading some old CD's to my HDD and when windows media player rips the CD the tracks are labelled as something like "track 1 900kbps"

So I'll rename the file to whatever it's actually called and it's done, but then I come back the following day to rip some more and see that some files have renamed themselves back to "track 1 900kbps"

There are some particular files that do this almost daily and others that happen less often. It's getting annoying.

Any ideas ?

I'm using 64 bit Windows 7 Home Premium

You cannot uninstall WMP but you can disable it. I have. Here's some illustrated instructions for you: http://www.ofzenandcomputing.com/disable-windows-media-player-windows-7/

I would try disabling it and see if the problem goes away.

Rechecking it wouldn't help. I personally hate the Windows Media Player, using the VLC Player (freeware) instead for music and videos. There's some instructions here you might find to be useful: http://www.andyrathbone.com/2010/02/23/why-do-the-names-of-my-music-files-keep-changing/

Let me know if it helps.

I already have VLC but I only use it for videos. If I start using VLC and ditch WMP will I be rid of this problem ?

How would I switch to VLC anyway ? WMP can't be uninstalled... Or can it?

You're welcome. You could check the preferences about permanently displaying the track title. Some tips with illustrations are here: https://www.ghacks.net/2013/09/25/get-vlc-media-player-tips/
You can have it display the title on screen when it starts but I've never tried to have it stay on all the time.
