You've got the right idea except;

you have to shoot the rocket when you are near the top but not AT the top of
the elevator. In other words, just before it stops moving you have to fire,
or right before it starts moving down again. (Something like that)

Shooting straight in while standing there doesnt work. I think it's because
the game engine cant see the target through the wall and so it does not
adjust the vertical aim angle.

Ok. a little misunderstanding here, you're talking about Doom 2, Icon of
Sin. I'm talking about Final Doom, Episode TNT and level Last Call.....

Sorry to butt in, but I have not yet successfully been able to end Doom 2
Icon of Sin even in the "God" mode. Is it possible??? Has it been done?
I am really looking forward to playing Doom 3 for the first tiime tomorrow,
but darn I wish I could legitimately finish Doom2.

First, you must raise the lift in the middle of the slime by pressing the
switch on top. Then, you need to activate and go on the lift after it's
finished raising.

You need to ensure that the rocket flies into the brain at the right time -
a good indicator is matching the skull's chin with the tip of your rocket
launcher.

You have to fire from one step down. It's a minor flaw with the graphic
design of the map, but is otherwise possible.

You have to hit the switch in the final room then teleport back and find
hidden rooms and teleporters.
