The 8700K isn't worth it.
Hello,

May I ask how this would out perform what I have set up? I don't get how the 8700K is not worth it? Could you explain that a bit?

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-8700K-vs-AMD-Ryzen-7-2700X/3937vs3958

The benchmarks reflect 10% better, and I know it's not much but 90 extra bucks for 10% (at a 1800 dollar build) might be worth it?

This is why I selected the 2080 as well, but now that I think about it, the 2070 is really close to performance of the 2080. That price difference is 220 dollars for 12%. That might not be worth it for the price.

https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-2080-vs-Nvidia-RTX-2070/4026vs4029

What do think if I go down in GPU, will it affect me greatly? This might be worth changing for the price difference.

Thank you

It's a nice build but the whole, 2700X vs 8700K depends on your monitor resolution and refresh rate. If were talking 1440P or 4K at 60hz then I'd go 2700X (or 1700 & aftermarket cooler as it would be cheaper) however if your looking at 144hz+ then you'll want the better performance per core which is the 8700K.

Both CPUs will push 1080/144 with a 2080 and at 1440 there is almost no difference.

If you are going to go with the 8700k then you might spend the extra $60 for the 9700k.
That being said you can get a 2080Ti in a $1800 build.

This will out perform that Intel build in games and productivity that uses a lot of cores.

Hello,

I totally agree, depends on the monitor and the desired result. To be honest I would hope anyone building a 1800 to 2000 PC would try for more then 144hz. I know some don't care but to spend 2k and not want that makes no sense. Does not mean I will get it but trying never hurts. I am going for 244hz with this build. I have a good friend that works for Dell and got me this for 225:

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/alienware-25-gaming-monitor-aw2518h/apd/210-amsr/monitor-accessories

I think I will try and reach the 244 but don't know if I will get it with this set up. Do you think it will reach 244 with the 2080?

I will have the G-Sync set up but I don't know if the 2070 will get me the 244hz? Since performance is not much higher than the 2080.

When I look at these benchmarks do they reflect the hardware at it's highest use? The 2080 running at 402FPS Parallax Mapping, does this benchmark reflect the hardware as stock or running at much higher hz? I apologize if this question is confusing.

Thank you

What games are you looking at playing? The 2070 and the GTX 1080 are close in performance. Same at the 2080 & 1080Ti. I'd look at benchmarks of those GPUs to determine what you can expect in performance.

I will play Classic WOW mainly, I know it's not FPS driven but I do play Fortnite on my PS4 and watching people have much better performance on PC makes me sad :(. So I wan't to try and get 244 on Fortnite, what a shocker. I notice many tech people don't like the Fortnite comparison since everyone thinks we want 10000 dollar rigs like Ninja has. (not the case at all but I want a good RIG that will last me 5 years)

I am also a person that plans for the future so if new title did come out my PC would be ready for that title. I am not a rich person but to me value comes in getting what you purely want. I am not bias on any of the parts besides the case, I like that case but everything can be changed if I will get better performance.

I know it sounds crazy to build a new PC for WOW and Fortnite but I have not built one in 16 years, since I was a beta tester for Blizzard in 2003. It's more about the experience and getting to know the hardware and what works best. I am truly lost with so many different options.

I wish we had less product on the market in some cases.

Thank you for the help and insight.

Nice monitor, but yea for 1080P/240hz I'd go Intel. A friend of mine uses the 9700K (similer performance to 8700K) with a GTX 1080 & a similar monitor (for resolution/refresh rate) and it can struggle to keep a smooth 240hz on Apex (he hasn't overclocked yet though). If it where me I'd get the 8700K and probably stick with the 2080 for higher settings although if budget is a concern the 2070 could do it.

While it isn't 240 have you considered getting something that would be good for both WoW & Fortnite?

I'd go 3440x1440P/VA or IPS/100hz/Freesync (you can use the 2080 with Displayport or just grab a Radeon VII for the Freesync).

The biggest factor in running games at the refresh rate will be the GPU. The 2080 or 2080Ti is the way to go. Your build is good, but I would change the PSU to the Seasonic Focus Plus and get the 1TB 660p instead of the Samsung 970. Either bank the savings or put it towards other components. The 2700X build with the 2080Ti will give you higher FPS than a 8700K w/ 2080.

Hello,

I have been looking into some IPS monitors I do hear they have great picture quality but the issue is the Alien ware Dell monitor is 225 for me and normally around 500. I think I am getting a pretty good deal on this monitor and it's hard to switch to a IPS that is not 244hz. A IPS 244hz is like 1000 dollars.

I looked into the Radeon VII and honestly since Nvidia has the 2 series out they are newer, I feel I would benefit from them in the future with the tech they offer.

I know many games can run over 100Hz, may I ask why I would limit myself to that type of display?

Thank you

Hello Jeremy,

May I ask why the change to a Intel SSD? I get the size is twice as much but the Samsung pro might be the best hard drive on the market? I don't see how the Intel SSD will deliver the same performance?

The only issue I have with the AMD CPU is that the 3000 series will come out in a month and honestly I think I might have to hold this build from being finished until the 3000 series benchmarks are provided. I am just so excited to build a PC I might be"jumping the gun."

I will switch the power supplies that's no problem, but may I ask why you suggest this one? I am more about learning what these little difference affect.

Thank you for your input I greatly appreciate it.

I totally understand waiting until July to build. I personally am waiting until then to start thinking of doing a new build myself. With the Intel SSD the reason is it is the best price/storage/performance you can get. Yes the 970 Pro has the best benchmarks out there, but real world you will hardly notice a difference between the NVMe & SATA SSDs.

Anyways refresh rate only make a noticeable difference depending on the games you play. For WoW your not going to see the difference between 100 & 240hz however in Fortnite it may be a bit smoother. Higher refresh rates are good for FPS such as the Battlefield series but I've gamed on both 16:9 144hz monitors and 21:9 75hz monitors and even on faster paced games I prefer the ultra wide for the peripheral view (so people can't flank me!).

With that being said, you are getting it for a good price so it is hard to pass up but won't colors look as good as a VA or IPS panel.
