I have a xps 420 that I got in 2009 and I just bought an Asus GTX 670 (current gtx 250) and want to upgrade my CPU (current Intel core quad CPU q6600 @2.4 GHz), PSU, and MoBo. What is the most bang for your buck/compatible components out there? Also do I need a new cooling system?

This is the list of Dell validated processor for your XPS, I will make bold for your and for maximum upgrade

HU587 Conroe Kit, E4300, 1.80G, 2MB, 800FSB, L2
DX483 Conroe Kit, E4400, 2.00G, 2MB, 800FSB, L2
DX485 Conroe Kit, E6320, 1.86G, 4MB, 1066FSB, B2

MP628 Conroe Kit, E6850, 3.00G, 4MB, 1333FSB, G0
WM543...
Not knowing your case, I can't comment on the cooling.
But you can put together a pretty nice PC here:
http://pcpartpicker.com/
Build your " PC " at pcpartpicker and then post the link to the build and the forum can/will make suggestions.
I suggest an socket 1150 and Haswell if you go Intel; FM3+ and an FX CPU if you go AMD. With AMD mobo recommend a 990x or fx chipset.
Choose a brand name/manufactured PSU - Corsair, Seasonic, EVGA V series, Roswell CAPSTONE series, XFX (made by Seasonic). Don't skimp on the PSU. Better to run a slightly slower CPU and maybe a step down from a very top of the line mobo in order to run a really dependable PSU.

If you are interested, choose CPU and let me know, so we can discuss cooling.

Since this list is validated by Dell, cooling upgrade will involve CPU heatshink and fan upgrade only, well maybe a few fans upgrades, nothing very serious.

Anything else i can help you with?

P.S. Or you can just overclock your Q6600 to 3 GHz if you wish.

Com Truise (Great name) and Kisianik: my apologies. That reply was written last night, Dec. 25th, pretty late in the evening. Amazingly I had not had any alcoholic beverages all day, and I still screwed up the answer. For what ever reason I thought the opening five words were referring to an Nvidia " 420 " video card (if the numbers ever went that low. I think the 430 was the bottom: wait I just looked -they actually had a 405, then a GT420!).
My point is I must have sounded like an idiot.
Com, reply to Kisianik's post if all you want to do is upgrade that CPU. He's right, simply OCing it a bit might do the trick.

You guys are great and I appreciate the answers. I went to a components supermarket (basically) today and found a great deal and got a Asrock z87 extreme4 motherboard and a intel i3 3.6ghz processor for $120. So now I have those and the gtx 670 and a corsair 600w psu. When I got them I realized I was going to redo the whole comp. tower included despite my love for the xps. So I used that site (thanks) and am looking at the fractal design define r4 as a tower. Is this good? This is my first build and is kind of happening spontaneously so I'm not fully sure if that will fit what I need. Also, what kind of cooling do you think I'll need? And I'm pretty sure my RAM will transfer over from the old mobo. Would you guys suggest buying new cards.

fractal design define r4, what is the price?
Does it has dust control?

I personally like case like CM HAFX 9** series - very practical, simple to use and relatively cheap for smaller towers.so I can not adivece much on your choice, anyway you already got the most importnt parts, the rest almost like walk in the park....... Until you actually start walking....

Good Luck.

Haha yea I can't wait to get this thing running. But I can get one for $80. I'll look at hafx just want to make sure everything fits. I'm looking at the cool master hyper 212 for cooling. What are you using?

If I am not mistaken, the RAM in your 420 is DDR2. The newer intel boards and cpu's support DDR3 and the two types of RAM are NOT interchangeable so you will need some DDR3 RAM.
You didn't post it, but is the i3 you purchased a Haswell CPU? All the Haswell's I have seen are label with a 4xxx model number and they are the ones that fit in your new mobo. An i3 with a 3xxx model fit in the previous generation 1155 socket,
again they are not interchangeable.
Your case choice is good, and like Kisianik, I am fond of the Cooler Master cases (I am using a CM Storm Sniper-kinda out of date as it has no USB3.0 front panel connections, but as all the HAF and STORM cases, has excellent air flow.)
Re. buying new cards: That 670 is still a pretty good piece of equipment. I would probably get it all together and see how it runs and plays games, save up a little cash, then think about upgrading.
