Finally asking for help re: SFF power supply

I've been researching non-stop for a couple days and have reached the point that I feel like I need to ask the experts.

Just the facts:

I am Upgrading an HP Pavilion Slimline s5-1110 so I can use an MSI N750Ti - 2GD5TLP which requires 20A on the +12V rail

The current PSU is an HP part No. PS-6221-9

It seems to be TFX spec, but is smaller than the spec requires. I have no room in the case for any more height(53mm) or width(85mm), but I have another 6" of depth available. Hopefully I am identifying H W and L correctly... I may have my axes wrong.

Dimensions of original power supply:

200mm x 85 x 53

8" x 2 1/8 x 3.5

I got my hands on a Solid Gear flex atx SDGR-FLEX320 and found it to be much smaller than my original PSU. However with 17A on the +12, it fell short and didn't boot.

I believe there are a number of TFX supplies that will fit and provide the amount of juice I need, but I've reached the end of my rope and my eyeballs are bleeding from reading spec sheets and shopping sites.


TL;DR: need TFX/ITX psi with 20+4pin main, 20A on +12, that fits within these dimensions:

Metric:

200mm x 85 x 53

U.S.:

8" x 2 1/8 x 3.5

so your current PSU is in a TFX standart, in that case the only option is a TFX too. the best i can find is the LC400TFX, but i doubt it can run the gpu you want.
i think you only have 2 options, or a new case and you fit the system there with a standart ATX psu, or a external PSU

Most TFX power supplies are too big. Flex ATX supplies fit as well. I did see an Athena supply that might meet the spec, and one which Solid Gear seems to have stopped producing, or at least most retailers don't carry.

max wattage i can see in the TFX format is 300W - 400W, so it will not work with the gpu you want.
as i said, or you get a new case and put a standard atx psu or you a standart psu outside the case

Except that TFX supplies don't fit. Most are too big; this HP machine was built around the proprietary supply it's equipped with.

Athena and Solid Gear both make flexATX PSU that would work, but I'm looking for more reputable brands and preferably something that has been tested by one of the many slimline builds on this site.

Even if I were looking exclusively at TFX supplies, There are 300-400W supplies with 20A on the +12, and based on the reference from MSI, I could get away with 19 or possibly 18 since my components use a lot less juice than their reference build.


Upgrading the case is not an option. At that point it's a new rig, which isn't in the budget.

Not cheap but decent.

Silverstone & seasonic also do modeksctgat will work but if anything are more expensive.

The FSP300 is 12V1 15A + 12V2 15A,

My impression is that you could pull 30A, but only 15A to a single device, and with an on-box req of 20A for the card, that worries me.

It wouldn't worry me mate, its a dc-dc unit & I highly doubt those are split physical rails anyway.

What CPU are you running - assuming a 65w chip the fsp will do the job 100% fine IMO.

Running a Pentium G620, a traditional 3.5" drive, a samsung SSD, and that should be about it for power draw.

The SDGR-FLEX320 with 17A on the 12V rail will not allow the machine to boot with the GTX750TI. Boots my Sapphire AMD HD 7750 1G D5 Low Pofile card just fine.

It's more likely that the new graphics card doesn't properly support UEFI boot.

Did you try disabling secure boot in the motherboard's BIOS setup?

The MSI N750Ti - 2GD5TLP draws, at most, 5 Amps from the +12V rail.

I will try this when I get home.

Looking over some spec sheets, I see that the 750Ti and the HD 7750 are nearly identical TDP. I thought the 7750 was something like 23 watts, but i was thinking of the 6450 which I had previously

I also plan to test this card in a friend's machine with a beefy power supply.

Alright, so there is no secure boot option in BIOS. I can select UEFI boot or legacy, but legacy won't get me into my win10 installation, and it can't get past splash screen with the card in anyway.

Everything I'm now seeing says that I have the CARMEL2 board, with maximum BIOS level of 7.13, which will not support GeForce 750 .

This card isn't equipped with the legacy boot switch either, so it's off to contacting MSI to see if I can flash a different vbios
