Are you tweaking the games or just going with the auto detect?

A X800GTO should at least be able to handle HL2 at 1024x768 with 4X/16X at max details. Maybe even 12x10 at those settings. FSAA makes a huge difference IMO as to how good HL2 looks, so I'd lower the res and keep FSAA on.

Use fraps to check your fps during playing.
try 12x10 with 4Xfsaa/16XAF max details
drop to 2X fsaa if framerates are too low for you.
Otherwise go to 10x7 with 4X FSAA.

If i wer you i would give resolutiuon priority, and try and get that as high as possible, then AF the lastly AA... AA is nice and improves the look a bit, but the higher u can get the res the less noticable it is, plus the performance hit you get from it isnt worth going it, if it means cutting back the resolution...

i have an X700 in a laptop.. that dose hl2 at 1280 x 1024 8xAF just fine, but at that resolution AA tends to kill it in some sceenes... and cutting back to 1024x768 just to use AA seems pointless to me... just my 2 cents...

Well - I've always been the opposite. If I switch it to 1280, then I have to adjust the monitor as well, I get black bars on the right and left... plus then enemies can be a little too small to see in the distance, making aiming a little harder... at least for me. I usually play at 1024X768, and it tends to be pretty nice.

I've been playing and playing pretty well at 1024, max everything, 2XAA and 16XAF... it makes it smooth. Every now and then I get a little tear, where when I turn it seems a small square in the middle of the screen doesnt move as quick. I don't know what thats called... its VERY quick, and no one else that plays even notices...

My next step will be Oblivian, if and when I get the game...

anyone wanna buy it for me? My Birthday is tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😱
