Some of you may recall one of my previous posts about people who construct computers are morons.
I love my new beast, but the people are still morons, even more so.
The story starts now.
What i got was:
athlon 1200 C
asus A7v133
decided to go for broke and get 512 mb PC150 kingmax *cheezy grin*
52x sony cd
rocoh 12x10x32x burner with justlink

and the rest of the components from my old rig including sb live, tnt2 ultra graphics, 40gig 60gxp, modem, monitor etc

they made it up the same day which was nice... but i shoulda checked it over instore.

its been 3 days and the things i have found are:

1. when i tried plugging in my hi-fi to the sb live, found the card was loose. later, when i had to open up the case, i found the card wasnt screwed down.

2. my hard drives wernt showing up in the bois or boot... but they were there on a promise controler... i soon realised that the morons had put my two drives on a raid 0 controller, when i had specifically said i DID NOT WANT anything fancy like a raid. just standard onboard ata100. (my two hard drives arnt the same size anyways, one 40gig, the other an older 16.8 @ 5400 ata33.)
so 2 minutes of ripping out cables, i had a proper setup on which i could install win2000. (and a spare ata100 cable)
once i had installed 2k and the ASUS monitoring software i took a look at the temps and things.

fan speed = 4500rpm (i also got a win fop 32-1)
vcore 1.8 (shouldnt it be 1.75?)
mb temp 39 deg c (hmm, no case fan)
idle processor temp 63-64 deg C!
full load: i saw it hit 66 before i throttled back!
Yikes
oh joy.
morons strike again.
methinks my nice big fop32 heatsink isnt on properly.
so either THEY didnt put it on properly, or the bumpy drive home has dislodged it somehow. OR (and this is more sinister...)
in the bios, i noticed that both the FSB and THE MULTIPLIER are UNLOCKED!
on a machine THEY put together.

Question to all you guys...
does this happen often? a naturally unlocked athlon 1200C?
do retailers often unlock them?
is the temp probe reporting right?
(heatsink is warm-hot to touch, but not toasty or finger burning)
the asus probe reports a vcore of 1.8V... realistic?
have they done a dirty on me and given me something like a 1000C already overclocked?
How can i find out EXACTLY what processor i have... via software if possible.

other interesting info
runs at about 61 C idle when i underclocked it to 1000 just to be safe.
other voltage settings seem slightly off too
processor voltage = 1.8
the one which should be 3.3V is 3.5
12V is 12.45
randomly every hour or so, the asus reporting utility pops up a warning that fan speed has dropped to zero. only for about 2-3 seconds... dont think it actually does (glitch in data feed from fan sensor?) seen it happen 4 times so far
also... once the core voltage jumped .1V too... also, only for 2-3 seconds. the same glitch?

Thanx in advance.
solve these problems and ill be set!

Doesn't that come with a 7000 rpm fan?? the FOP32?

mb temp 39 deg c (hmm, no case fan)
YOUCH! Thats way too high!!

It seems to be happening more frequently these days
count your blessings :)

is the temp probe reporting right?
Asus Probe is usually 10C higher than BIOS.
BTW, what bios are you using?
goto www.braziliantech.com and download the 1004/FXD
bios for the temperature fix. You can try 1005/FXD
but I haven't tried it yet. 1004/FXD works great for
me.

(heatsink is warm-hot to touch, but not toasty or finger burning)
Is it aluminum? If so, sounds like you might be in the
mid 40C range.

Check the BIOS.

What PSU do you have? be careful with getting an
underpowered no name PSU, you'll experience
dips and spikes in the voltage output.

On the voltage, my Vcore is set 1.775 and reports 1.75 after boot (Abit kt7a). This Vcore runs my 1200/266 as stable as the rock of Gibralter.

Change to 1.75vcore and you should see a drop in temps.
When I go to 1.80 my temps go up 12F. So your temps should drop that much when you go to 1.75 Vcore.

On the multiplier, They're all unlocked, or rather they don't have the bridges cut at the fab house.

I'd remount the HSF with those kind of temps...and i'd
use a good dab of thermal paste too.

I'm trying to remember what my temps were with the stock HSF, I think it was something like 52C max load conditions. But my Blzzard brought it down to 42C

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.

Thanx guys :)
my hamster is really happy.

i will watch the idle temps in the bios for a while see how that goes, and ramp down the core voltage.

i checked out TOMS 46 cooler roundup, and the FOP32-1 fan speed is 4600, & mine fluctuates around 4500 or so, so i think thats good enough.
P.S. the highest fan speed was 6700 rpm. NO 7000rpm coolers!

when i get time ill apply all the patches and stuff.
didnt realise how much effort was reuqired to construct my operating system from scratch.
win2k
monitor setup
graphics drivers
sound
modem
dialup settings
office
games
and all those other nifty little programs one cant live without!
taken me all weekend to find the stuff *grins*

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

I sense this may be another poster child for the "buy more AMD" campaign.

Hey, fugger's back!
Got anything on those hundreds of incompatibilities yet?

Nope, just a rapidly growing list of Intel incompatibilities... The Itanium is incompatible with everything right now!

Thank you ever so much fruger for your insigtful & helpful comments.

Upon further investigation (i.e. watching the bois) it appears that the asus probe is missreading just about everything... especially the core temp.

the fan speed is out by about 50 rpm or so, the processor voltage IS actually 1.75, not the reported 1.8, and the biggest suprise was the core temp. instead of idle 64 C it was more like 53!... about right for a rather poorly ventilated case.
p.s. bois revision 1004 on asus A7V133 (KT133A)
terribly sorry fruger to dissapoint, but a happy amd customer here...
and since my multipliers are unlocked... i can always set them to
7.0 X 133 to get an equivalent priced pentium 3 :)

hmmms. and i havnt even installed the Via southbridge patch yet (4in1's) and ive already moved around huge +500 mb files.

now if you will excuse me... i must go play baldurs gate 2 @ 1024x786 & mega smooooth :)

Actaully you'd be hard pressed to find an athlon/266 that's NOT unlocked. All the one's I've seen had their L1 bridges intact. And it's easy to see what ur CPU is...it's printed right on the die.

incompatibilities...
hmmms

well as of my previous post the asus probe utility is missreading just about all my hardware temps & things... but i think i can just get a patch for that.

oh... and my warez version of need for speed 5 porsche doesnt work.
huge suprise there. :)
thats it so far.

but is there any way i can tell that i have a genuine 1200 C WITHOUT peeling off the heatsink???
i.e. bios or software?

I KNOW i dont have experience setting heatsinks... so im not going to try.
