finally time to upgrade, start with an AMD RX 480 or stick with Nvidia?

right now I've got this setup, quoting the best answer post I selected in 2012 when I asked for build advice lol:

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: NZXT HAVIK 140 90.3 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Storage: OCZ Vertex 4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Video Card: EVGA Nvidia GTX 670 (2gb I believe) Video Card
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 (Arctic White) ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: Antec 750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer

everything is working well, the CPU is overclocked and the GPU is overclocked but I've always found the GPU a little disappointing and now that there's a really good and really cheap VR ready GPU coming out, I was thinking of upgrading to it and giving my old GPU to my friend so he gets out of dedicated graphics, all he would use it for is simple 2d emulation anyway.

would the RX 480 be a good choice or is there a better Nvidia budget card coming out soon?

I was thinking of buying the RX 480 8gb card for $229 to see how it runs and later on, since I had bought a powerful enough PSU to support SLI/XFIRE, I could buy another one to have a real powerhouse ready for the upcoming games. I don't do much PC gaming outside of emulation and WOW but if I knew my PC could run everything maxed out at 60 fps, I would play more games on it.

I get paid Friday so if the 480 is as good as the hype train says it is, I'll preorder that, get it in the mail late next week, install it then help my friend install the 670 into his rig we built a year ago, so it's win win.

the two alternatives would be the GTX 1070 or the GTX 1080, which is a difficult choice because two 480's would beat out the 1080, but does every game support crossfire/would play smoothly with two cards as opposed to one?
