Hello, I have a couple of IBM thinkcentre 8172 sff desktops that need new PSU. Have not been able to find an new replacement at a reasonable price. If anyone knows of one I would appreciate? Can I use a generic $15-20 PSU and leave it outside of the small case and just run the wires through the back where the old one was? Supprising how many of these computers were made and now replacement PSU's are available.

Here's a list of budget PSU's $10-$25 from Newegg (sorted by Best rating).

Check the list to make sure you have sufficient power. If you're talking about this IBM Thinkcentre (http://www.logisticsct.com/shop/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1666) then just use a similar wattage PSU as the built-in one was, but I think with ~400W of power you'll have more than enough juice.

Also, running the wires through the case with the PSU on the outside is recipe for disaster IMO. Also collects more dust than usual, leading to a shorter lifespan of the PSU. I don't know why you'd want to do this, but installing it doesn't take that long: usually 4 screws and you're done ;)

First off this is a double post second the think center he has is a small form factor other wise known as Micro ATX. Noemal ATX power supplies will not fit!!!

Here is the first post.

The existing psu is a 24R2567 and size is 4''x4''x3'', which I have not been able to cross reference to any other mfg. The one you reference is compatible with 24R2596.

Ok, I found a psu that will fit dimension wise 4.92x3.93x2.55. It is a Startec micratxpow 255, see below:

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&rlz=1R0MOZA_en&q=ultra+micro+psu&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=13984817966156904854&ei=ZUidS-GuCIq-sgPQuoV-&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=5&ved=0CCwQ8wIwBA#scoring=tp

However, the fan is on the TOP of the psu not the BACK (facing out of the case) like the original. The lid of the pc case would be directly on top of the fan. Would this work or is the psu just going to burn out quickly due to too much heat? :??:

It's not going to work.
You're computer uses an odd shaped SFF power supply.
