Hello
I'm currently looking for a CPU that could handle 1440p gaming and wondering between a ryzen 7 1700 or a ryzen 5 1600 my gpu is going to be the gtx 1070 but I might pick up the new vega card if it is worth the money but I just want to know if having more cores would be benifitual and what'll handle my 1440p gaming needs

More cores and threads come out on top when you are streaming as well as gaming(simultaneous). As of late, the mainstream market is populated with quad core CPU's and the game development industry hasn't really begun to take advantage of more than 4 cores.

We will need to wait and see what 2018 brings for that trend since the shift from dual cores to quad cores was fairly recent.

Most important question, what Hz? At 60Hz/60fps the cpu is not as important but if trying to push high fps for a high Hz monitor the cpu is far more important and the 7700k is king.

There are a few recent AAA games already using more than 4 cores and looking at games releasing in H2 2017 many AAA games are recommending CPU's with more than 4 cores.
