Here's a link to a PC that a friend helped me piece together at PC Part Picker. Anything out of the ordinary or unusual? Hoping to do some casual gaming with it and light video editing. I don't know much about PC building, but he recommended I build myself to save a lot of money.

Like I said, I don't know much about PCs. I was honestly about to chose a console before someone told me to consider building. Do you have advice?

I have a 500gb external hard drive. The 160gb is to store the OS and maybe basic programs.

sorry for my last comment, Just wanted to get something out while I was making this.

Okay so upgradeability wise this is great but going with an AMD X4 860K and getting a cheaper motherboard would definitely make a difference if you want I can make my own part list. Also if you take my advice the extra money could go to a better gpu such as a 270x or 280 if your willing to buy used.

I appreciate you taking the time to make changes. Can you explain any of the improvements? I apologize for my lack of knowledge. It's mostly the processor I'm curious about.

Who is that directed to?

If you don't mind. Any bit helps!

That one in particular was to Zanda. New to the site...

Mainly I switched the CPU to the pentium for the upgrade path, later on you can spend 150-200 dollars on a I5.
and I chose this motherboard because I've heard people had good Overclocking experience with the pentium with the H97 boards.

and the GPU is fine for 1080 gaming, but Let me see if I can fit a R9 280 in the budget.

Same Build but with MUCH better GPU.

Okay so what I'm proposing is that you go with a different cpu, the AMD X4 860K over the Intel Pentium G3458. I am recommending this because the 860K has four cores instead of two (Intel Pentium G3458), so the 860k is better than the G3458 because it has two more cores and is also overclockable. But in the long term if you want to change or upgrade CPU's using the G3458 is a better choice.

this is miss information, the pentium and X4 perform almost exactly the same for gaming.
and for video editing the stronger cores of the pentium will be faster overall, along with the lower heat and better overclocking of the pentium makes it better overall.

Are you saying the athlon x4 over intel but the rest being with Zanda's proposed build?

Basicly this is what he's saying but remember you would have to switch the motherboard because the chipset's are completely different.

also there is basicly no upgradability of the X4 CPU

So you're saying any core of the pentium is twice as fast as the athlon, so it's actually faster? Or almost/equally as fast?

Edit: fixed my post.

In raw processing power No, but interms of real world kinda, its hard to explain.

the 2 CPU's are neck and neck in alot of things but the pentium is'nt really cut and dry like that, there are some things it loses in and it tends to be benchmarks, but in real world performance the pentium tends to be better.

this is partly because games like faster fewer cores rather than more slower cores.
I myself have never needed to deal with this as I've never used anything less than a 4 core I5 in my Rigs.

Alright, thanks again! I'll mess with the build a bit, and maybe just boost the processor altogether up to a better model. Might be worth it.
