Having read through the paper in detail, I think we should all be worried.
Very worried. And it is essential that everyone with interests in shooting
in the UK respond to it. Responses must be in by 31st August 2004.

In brief, the paper is looking for an answer to rising levels of gun crime,
and are considering 5 areas: Handguns, rifles, shotguns, ait weapons,
imitations.

The basic stats are as follows: (using figures from 1998/9 to 2002/3,
numbers of recorded crimes in which firearm used)

Handguns. 5549, up by 106.5%
Air Weapons 13822, up by 59.51%
Imitations 1815, up by 220%
Rifles 52, up by 21%
Shotguns 671, up by 4.5%

But the foreword from David Blunket to the consultation seems to suggest
that:

Airguns - further restriction would not be effective in reducing misuse.

Imitations - licencing would be unenforceable.

Handguns. Well, they are of course already illegal in this country, so that
ones sorted!

This leaves shotguns and rifles. So obviously the best thing for the
goverment to do is to get really tough on licenced owners of shotguns and
rifles.

The effect of this will be:

To please the urban voter. They do not understand why anyone should want a
gun - nasty, dangerous things, and bless Tony for doing something really
positive about it.

Effect on gun crime - absolutely ah heck all!

I think that all shooters of every discipline, all who hunt and all who fish
had better join together for mutual support. If you do not all your
individual sports will be suppressed one by one. As each is suppressed the
voting power of the remainder is diminished until that voting power is so
diminished the government can disregard it entirely. All shooting banned
and all guns illegal. Unless you all, collectively, get your act together I
suspect that this will happen within ten years.
