[SOLVED] firmware upgrade from WD dashboard

just downloaded randomly the WD dashboard it suggested a firmware update should I do it? (and will this have a negative performance impact on the hard drive?)
will this ruin my data?!
and if there is a possibility that something goes .. (no power supply I got a UPS and a good power grid) will it permanently destroy my data?
should I do a backup before updating?
