Time to replace my aging router. Has there ever been a review of the different router brands' native firmware?

What most people do with routers is very basic. They run wifi radios and the device does NAT. The vast majority of people set the passwords and never touch the router again.

After that it is going to matter what feature matters most to you. Do you need parental controls or vpn or maybe the NAS support. Some routers even have torrent clients so your router can download your stolen movies without a pc.

Only you can say the value of these features. If you want the most feature you load third party firmware like dd-wrt.

Firmware is usually just specific bug fixes and optimizations once an issue or potential issue has been found as things go on, but the hardware itself is all that really matters. So, no I don't believe anyone is going to review firmware unless it's a side note review of the hardware. And usually if it's even mentioned it's because the firmware upgrade was a desperate necessity for functionality.
