Hey guys, i just wanted to know if this build I'm about to do in 2 weeks will be good enough for gaming. My budget is $ 770 and i want to play games on my 48 inch HDTV.I'm getting a AMD FX 4100 with a Radeon HD 6850, NO overclocking will be done on this build or two GPUs.I'm getting the FX 4100 because it's cheap and fast and later this year i want to upgrade to the new fixed versions of the AMD Bulldozer CPU's AMD will release later this year.

So, will this build I'm about to get be good enough to get 30 to 60 fps on games(Crysis 2 Battlefield 3 Arma 2 ect.) with high/ultra settings for at least a year until AMD releases the fixed Dozers ?

Here are the components:

AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) Socket AM3+ 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor FD4100WMGUSBX

They say Windows 8 will fix the problems AMD are having, my games should still have playable good fps on Windows 7 with a tiny boost from the two Windows 7 hotfixes maybe, until the window 8 upgrade ?

Also, if you look at this article:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-fx-pentium-apu-benchmark,3120.html

It shows that even the Pentium G860 outperforms the FX4100 AND FX6100. Therefore, I recommend spending the extra $15 and getting the core i3 2120, which outperforms EVERY AMD CPU under $200 in games, which you'll also see in that article. Currently, AMD just isn't up to par in the desktop gaming world.

I'm really hoping Windows 8 will include things to make AMD CPUs work better but I'm doubting it. To me so far Windows 8 is looking like Vista with a cell phone interface. That's bad.

High end desktop they will not try and compete anymore they are still in tho.

Windows doesnt handle threads in a way that optimises bulldozers power management . All that happens is that in some cases bd wont clock itself up when its only running a couple of threads .

There is no reason to avoid BD . The FX 4100 is great value as a gaming cpu .
And while you might not OC it now you can do that later if you wish

Thanks, i might have to do that.I really, really want the core i5 but that would put me way over budget. And the AMD quad fx is perfect money wise for me, if only AMD didn't have this problem with the FX CPUs everything would be perfect

Awesome ! What kind of GPU did you have with the FX 4100 ? And were you able to play games on high/ultra without any probs ?

of course, all those games are more GPU intensive than CPU intensive, an intensive MMO might struggle more.

Thanks,

Yeah, I'm taking a look at every alternative now. It's kinda crazy that amds older cpus seem to be better than the new ones.

Thanks, yeah it might be to good of a value to pass up,plus they did say these work slightly better if you OC.Hmmm, this is gonna be a tough decision.I wish i had the option to save a extra $ 100 or 200 but i don't.

Even if some of intels budget chips are fractionally faster than an FX 4100 they wont be once you OC the FX 4100 .
Remember the intel i3's cant be overclocked

The FX 4100 is a budget king IMO . If you build for it now you also get the upgrade path of the next generation of piledriver cpu's
