Hi guys,

Never built a PC before and not had a desktop in a long time. The limit of what I've done computer wise is put some extra Ram and an SSD in my old Alienware 18. I'm very mechanically minded with an engineering background and have done a pile research. Think I'll be OK on the build, but picking the parts, perhaps not so much!

I'm putting a build together on Pcpartpicker.com (an awesome tool), and wanted to run it by some people in the know. This is the dream build I guess, which I want sanity checking and advice where I'm paying too much for an item where another brand would be as good or better.

CPU: Intel - Core i7-7820X 3.6GHz 8-Core Processor (£480.78 @ Alza)
CPU Cooler: NZXT - Kraken X62 Rev 2 98.2 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler (£135.95 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: Asus - STRIX X299-E GAMING ATX LGA2066 Motherboard (£289.99 @ Aria PC)
Memory: G.Skill - Trident Z RGB 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Memory (£330.94 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£86.09 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 1TB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£271.00 @ Amazon UK)
Video Card: NVIDIA - GeForce GTX 1060 (£300.00)
Case: Phanteks - Enthoo Pro M Tempered Glass ATX Mid Tower Case (£84.37 @ Box Limited)
Power Supply: EVGA - SuperNOVA G2 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (£124.99 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
Optical Drive: Asus - DRW-24F1ST DVD/CD Writer
Sound Card: Asus - Xonar DSX 24-bit 192 KHz Sound Card (£59.99 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
Wireless Network Adapter: TP-Link - TL-WDN4800 PCI-Express x1 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi Adapter (£24.98 @ PC World Business)

Let me know what you reckon. Not a cheap build but am building an editing and perhaps gaming rig to last a good while.

Thanks guys.

Luke

My comments:
1. CPU may be overkill and too expensive.
2. GPU is a little bit weak but may be OK depending on what software you are going to use.
3. PSU is way overkill, any 420W + should do fine.
4. HD audio on MB should be enough, no need for extra sound card.

What software are you going to use for rendering? Is Intel your only choice?

Thanks for the response.

1. CPU may be overkill and too expensive - Been looking a render comparisons and this seemed like a good option but if there's something else?
2. GPU is a little bit weak but may be OK depending on what software you are going to use - Premiere Pro to edit 4k seems to be what trips up the current laptop
3. PSU is way overkill, any 420W + should do fine - Thanks and noted.
4. HD audio on MB should be enough, no need for extra sound card - Cool didn't know this. Isn't there also WIFI on some motherboards?

What software are you going to use for rendering? Is Intel your only choice? - Premiere Pro. I did read somewhere that Ryzon chips weren't optimised for it but people seem to be making Ryzon 4k pc's.

Some MB does have wifi, but your choice does not include.

This has some really good info for your build: From what I read, GTX 1070+ seems to be recommended. For CPU, it has all kinds of CPUs (tiny links under the 7800X figure) What is your total budget?

This has comparison between 1700X, 1800X and i7-7820X. You can actually buy a 1700 and OC to same or better level than 1700X, 1800X. The cost is ~$300 while i7-7820X is ~$500+ for like 15% diff. For me, I will get Ryzen 1700 and spend the extra money on a GTX 1070. Then get 450+ PSU.
