Hello all,

I am about to order my first build ever, and I would like some advice (comments/questions at the end of post):

CPU: Intel i5 4690k
Cooler: CM Hyper 212 EVO
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z97-Gaming 7 ATX
RAM: 2 x 4 GB G-Skill Ripjaws X Series DDR3-1600
HDD: Toshiba internal 2 TB 3.5”
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970 Windforce Video Card
Case: Corsair 750D ATX Full Tower
PSU: Corsair AX Series 860W 80+ Platinum Cert. Fully-Modular ATX
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer
OS: Windows (8.1 or 7, still can’t decide)

I’ve done a few days (several hours each) of research, and this is what I’ve come up with given the price range available to me. Although this is my first build, I invested in some seemingly overkill parts as a means of self future-proofing. But with this setup as is, I plan to play games (mainly RPG, some FPS and MMO) at 1080p ~60frames/s. Later, I will add a second monitor (for streaming/playing videos as I play on the primary). I want to give myself the ability to overclock once I get comfortable with my build and its behavior. I will eventually make the upgrade to SLI twin 970’s.

So, I know that even with 2 SLI 970’s, the power requirement is only about 700W, whereas I have selected the 860W model over the cheaper 760W model. I feel as if it is safe (and given only a 20$ difference between them, I can’t see why I shouldn’t get the 860-though I could be convinced otherwise if someone can factually state that OC’d twin 970’s won’t go past 760W) to have the extra headroom.

Based on pcpartpicker and all of the reading I have done, I believe (though I could use some reassurance) all of my hardware is compatible. My main questions are:

Does anything seem like extreme overkill/unnecessary even given my future plans?
Do I need to make an immediate investment in extra (air, not water) cooler fans, or will my temps be fine with case fans + CPU cooler? I imagine an extra fan will be needed once I get into SLI, but will I need to do it immediately, given that I would like to overclock in the not-too-distant future?

Also, if someone can recommend (with reasoning) a better performing/looking ATX full tower case (has to have a window) at a similar price, I could be convinced to switch.

Thank you for your help!

P.S. If I need to split this into several threads, I can, though I would hope for a quick wrap-up here. :)

Well, you could place the RAM sticks further, but if you want to add RAM later on, they wouldn't...

Thank you for pointing out the cooler/ram space problem--much appreciated! Just to be thorough, however, wouldn't it be possible to place the RAM sticks at the memory slots furthest from the cooler? Or are they just that big?

Also, I must ask, why do you recommend a hard drive switch?

Thanks again for helping!

Well, you could place the RAM sticks further, but if you want to add RAM later on, they wouldn't fit on the nearer slots from the cooler, cause the RAM would need to be the exact same model.

As for the hard drive, Toshiba HDD's are not very good compared to WD or Seagate.
