Hi All,

I have been trawling and reading various threads for 2 months as I plan my first PC gaming build. I am hoping you will be able to advise and help me before I jump into this - its much appreciated.

Key considerations:

  • Budget: GBP 1,900 (USD 3200)
Probably will overclock when I learn how to, within a couple months of purchase
Very important to have a quiet running system - dont like fan noise
Will only be playing off 1 monitor only (23 inch)
Parts will be bought in 3 weeks

CPU:
i7 4770K (I have heard that for gaming i5 is sufficient but I have some budget). Might overclock it when i find out how. (Are there programs with the motherboards that can do this?)

Graphic Card:
Need your help on this one :??: - GIGABYTE WINDFORCE GTX 780, ASUS VGA GTX780-3GD5 or the 770 4GB card or R9 290X 4G DDR5
Impressed with the performance reviews on the R9 290X but worried about sound and heat would drive me nuts - but I have heard that when MSI/Sapphire/ASUS re-build them (?) they could have reduced noise..? The Price of GTX 780's might drop - maybe better going with them? 3GB vs 4GB? I have no loyalties with either card.

Drives:
I have another laptop to store music and documents. So was thinking of ONLY getting a Samsung 250 GB SSD and not bother with a Hard drive? Thoughts on this, is it advisable?

CPU Cooler:
This section is a Big headache for me :??:, with noise as the main concern. I cant make up my mind between Dark Rock2; Corsair Hydro100i, NoctuaNH-14, Hyper212 EVO, Phantecks PH. I have read on some reviews that the Corair Hydro 100i does make plenty of noise along with the Hyper212 EVO. Please help on this one...

Cases / Tower:
Love the look of R4 Fractal Design and the Bitfenix Cases - Fractal has good sound suppression I believe..I will also be buying 4 Noctua fans to replace the case fans, Ive read this helps.

Motherboard:
Most good things I read were around ASUS boards. Z87 Plus or X79 deluxe, or SaberTooth z87, ASrock Extreme. Asus Hero seemed a little pricey. What you reckon?

Power:
Seasonic x650W is meant to be fairly quiet and fan only operates when it gets warm. Also the Corsair HX850 seems good for audio.

Monitors:
I have read some good things about ASUS monitors but I am also a big fan on SAMSUNG screens. Any recommendations??. Size wise, 23 inches is more than enough. I have ready about refresh rates at 144hz, etc. But not 100% sure on what i need. I'm not a pro-gamer but appreciate landscape beauty like you see in Skyrim, Oblivion, - etc.

Many thanks!!! :)

As far as the choice for only having a 250 GB SSD it depends how many games you plan on playing. I would still reccomend even a 500 GB HDD for some games and have your top played games on the SSD.

CPU cooler choice: The noctua NH-D14 is really quiet, famously so if i am not mistaken.

The R4 is a great case.

X79 motherboards are for a completely different CPU socket (LGA 2011) do not buy an X79 motherboard for an i7-4770K. I have heard that the Z87 Sabertooth thermal armour traps heat so I wouldnt go with that one personally.

144Hz monitors wont add to graphical juiceyness. I think all that means is the screen will be able to render 144 FPS as opposed to 60Hz only being able to render 60 FPS. Dont take my word on that though as im not 100% sure.

Hi Ronald,
Thanks for getting back to me. I only really have 10 steam games installed at any one time and maybe 4 other titles (BF3, etc) so I reckon the 256GB could do it.

Thanks for the info on the Sabertooth and making sure the boards are Z87!!!! I think I am leaning towards a non liquid cpu cooler option which probably is quieter.

Let me know if you have any thoughts on the GPU selections.
thanks
