I have been posting different builds, still trying to nail down what works best. I do not intend to over clock since the pc will be used just for school work and gaming.

Case: Corsair Carbide 200R
CPU: i5-4570
MOBO: MSI H87-G43
Ram: Ripjaws 1600 8GB
PSU: SeaSonic M12II 620W
GPU: EVGA 770 GTX
Storage: WD 1TB
Asus DRW/CD drive
OS: Windows 8

Not bad. If you want to save some money you could go with a 280x, get A data XPG ram ( $10 cheaper same performance) get a NZXT Source 220 case, and lastly I would go for a better motherboard.

I am trying to keep it around $1000. What would be a safer motherboard? I thought about Z87-A but it was an extra $40.
