Hey guys so I am about ready to buy all of the parts I need to build a new computer. I am mainly looking to play WoW on ultra with around 40 fps and also do some gaming videos in the future. I will also be doing some school work on it. Here is the build I have come up with and would love some feedback. I cannot exceed $1000 so keep that in mind. Thanks!

here are some suggestions. a bit more budget motherboard that has a combo deal with the case you are looking at on newegg. a bit better gpu for gaming and RAM ( it looks like for forgot that) and a 600 watt PSU is more than enough for any single graphics with an overclocked intel platform.

My suggestion to you to obtain your goal is to cut back on that motherboard. Unless you plan on extreme overclocking, which is not likely on an air cooler, paying $150 on a motherboard is not worth it. I have a 4.5 GHz overclock on a $80 motherboard. So I would suggest lowering the motherboard to something more in the $90-$120 range then put that extra money towards a better GPU. Assuming you're gaming at 1920x1080, the 7850 will not suffice on ultra with Mists of Pandaria. I run an extremely overclocked 7950 and still get dips to 30 in cities, which would be even worst if I were to be recording video. I usually average 60-100 though, depending on the area/dungeon/raid.

For a sub-1000$ online gaming ( WoW ), video recording, I'd suggest this setup instead:

Better board for gaming ( this MSI board has Bigfoot Killer LAN controller ), better VGA card for WoW ( it favors nvidia more ), faster SSD, faster HDD, more sufficient PSU as well. Cheaper case but actually came with more airflow.

The normal 660 still won't out perform a 7950 in WoW. The differences between those SSDs and HDDs aren't a make it or break it deal and you likely won't notice much of a difference. Also, his original PSU is actually "better" and gives him more than enough headroom to overlock or add another GPU if so desired.

Also, if you plan on hooking in through Ethernet and not SLI'ing or XFire'ing then the MSI Z77-G41 is still a great budget board.

Since it's just over 40fps in 1080p, both 2 VGAs will be sufficient, it's just that nVidia's driver is less buggy on WoW than AMD's. As for motherboard it's due to special LAN controller and good OC potential it its price range. Agree about PSU but the thread starter actually forgot to add RAM bars to his build there.

But if he ventures away from WoW then he will want at least a 660Ti or a 7870. He also did not forget the ram slot. That motherboard he has selected comes with 8GB for free.

EDIT: Xuluu, do you plan on overclocking much and do you have a need for built in wireless?

i'll have to beg to differ with the 7850 overclocking past a 660s performance in WoW. at best it will trade blows in other games and that is strictly depending on which 7850.

Even the worse 7850 would pass 1050mhz ( over 20% increase ) in core clock if you OC. Most 660s hardly past 1150 ( 10% ).

you cannot compare core speeds between different arches (GCN vs Kepler) like that. @ stock the 660 is ~12% faster than the 7850 in most games; adding 20% to the clock doesn't equate to a 20% in fps. at best it will match it- until you overclock the 660. the only exception is the club 3d sold in the UK. that 7850 is on steroids.

seriously thank you for all of the input guys. I really like qb's build, although is it difficult to overclock the 660? If I did overclock it would I see a considerable performance boost?

take a read through this thread:
[OFFICIAL] GTX 660 (NON TI) Owners Club.
modifying the bios is optional but it will give you an idea.
(to beat a dead horse)
i strongly advocate a 660 over a 7850 when playing WoW.

wow_1920_1200.gif

if you were playing hitman:absolution than the 7850 would be a better choice. but aside from that game (and possibly tomb raider) the 660 is hands down the best gpu ~$200.

cheers.
