I decided to overclock my CPU yesterday after much research. I watched a bunch of videos and read articles on how to do it. I set my multiplier and CPU core voltage to default and I incremented the multiplier once, ran LinX 20 times, repeated that process until BSOD, increased voltage by small increment, repeated all steps until I hit ~70C running LinX/Prime95(Small FFT).
Here are my specs/setup and overclock parameters:
CPU: Intel i5 4690K currently overclocked at 4.2GHz
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Motherboard: MSI Z97 PC Mate LGA 1150
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) SDRAM DDR3 1600 MHz
GPU: Sapphire Radeon R9 280
Case/AirFlow: NZXT Phantom 410
2 120mm intake fans in the front (came with the case)
1 120mm JetFlo exhaust fan in back
1 140mm exhast fan top rear (came with the case)
1 120mm Cooler Master stock fan mounted on heatsink blowing air towards the two exhaust fans
PSU: XFX TS 550W
The fan on the CPU cooler and JetFlo fan adjust their speeds based on the heat of the CPU. The JetFlo fan always spins faster (also has a higher CFM) than the CPU cooler fan. I'm fairly certain my case is creating negative pressure. All the other fans are on high (although they are quite weak).
Overclock settings:
BCLK: 100MHz
CPU Multiplier: 42
CPU Core Voltage: 1.07V
I turned off Turbo Boost and C-state to overclock. Will turn C-state back on when stable.
Everything else was left on default.
I feel like my CPU core voltage is on the lower side, but my temperatures are at the "safe temperature for stress testing" threshold. I'm running a Prime95 Blend test as I write this up. It's been at it for 3 hours and max temps have reached 71C.
The only thing I can think of is that this is a cooling problem. However, I made sure to spread the thermal compound correctly as well as make sure the CPU Cooler was mounted right and tight.
I know everyone's CPU is different, but I've seen others with the same CPU reach 1.1V - 1.3V with lower temperatures and higher clocks.
Is there something I am missing?
