Hey guys. Nice to see this place is still kicking. Haven't been here in so long I don't even remember my username.

So here's the deal. I'm about to start a build that will be used pretty much exclusively for gaming and the Oculus Rift when it comes out. I need it to be able to record video while running games or VR apps in the same way as the Youtubers that do the game walk throughs and what not. Video editing will be done on a Mac so that's not a concern. Just need to be able to capture HD video and hopefully write it straight to an external drive.

For the CPU, I'm figuring an i7 but which version? Going for best bang for the buck here. Will probably upgrade when the rift comes out.

Need a motherboard that will provide a good upgrade path. Are wi-fi and bluetooth common built in features with motherboards yet? Wouldn't mind at least the wi-fi as that's the only way I'll be able to connect this machine.

Video card not planning to go top of the line on that because by the time the Rift comes out I'll be upgrading anyway.

Any advice on specific capture cards and/or methods of capturing video without compromising performance appreciated.

---------------------------------------------

Approximate Purchase Date: Anytime from now until a month from now. Not in a rush but have the funds.

Budget Range: $1800 but don't mind going higher if needed.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, Oculus Rift and capturing HD video while gaming and using the Rift. It will be used for nothing else.

Are you buying a monitor: Already bought the monitor but that's my only purchase so far and not part of my $1800 budget.

Parts to Upgrade: No old parts to re-use. 100% new build.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes. What is recommended for my uses? Windows 7 or 8? Which version?

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Don't care. Used to use pricewatch.com back in the day.

Location: City, State/Region, Country Phoenix, AZ.

Parts Preferences: Good quality brands. Intel, Asus, etc.

Overclocking: I'd like to have the ability.

SLI or Crossfire: Heard the Rift doesn't work well with SLI so probably not but again, I'd like the ability.

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080 144hz.

Additional Comments: I would like it to be quiet but doesn't have to be silent. I also need advice on HD Video capture devices and methods and my rig will unfortunately need to connect to the internet over wi-fi. I want to be able to capture video with as small a performance loss as possible. Same with connecting to wi-fi.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Not an upgrade. Been getting the itch to do some PC gaming and VR so that's the purpose for the new build.

With that budget, you can go with an X99 build. Given how long you keep your systems, it is probably a logical choice. Windows 7 or 8 doesn't really matter, since you will be able to upgrade either to 10, for free. Just get whichever you like better. From what I understand, new graphics cards are coming soon, so you might want to wait for that.
