First pc build, should I upgrade? Please advise

So my current setup is an asus h170 pro, with a stock i7 6700 and a msi gtx 970 OC while using a acer xb270 bprz, which is 1440p 144hz with g-sync. It currently runs amazing with BF4 running at avg fps beyond 60 at max settings. I have an Asus z170-A on the way because I was thinking about buying an msi gtx 970 gaming 4g to SLI, obviously upgrading the power supply to support this. Is it really worth it? I prioritize how games look and only really need high fps when its something competitive like BF4. Or should I just wait for the next generation of GPU's to come out later this year?

Personally I'd wait until you find the 970 is not meeting your needs, it sounds like you want to upgrade for the sake of it? I wouldn't go sli 970's, the 970 has the 3.5/4gb issue which at 1440p could start being noticeable. Going sli means you have huge gpu power but 3.5/4gb VRAM ignoring DX12 which is way off from being mainstream. If you had to upgrade I'd say sell the 970 and get a 980Ti, near enough same power as sli 970's, has an extra 2/2.5 gb VRAM, will use less power and is supported by all games with no chance of sli issues

Worth is something only YOU can determine.
sli will win you fps benchmarks, but gameplay is better with a single good graphics card.
You may find stuttering or screen tearing because of out of sync dual cards.
Today, you have upgrade options to GTX980ti which will be superior.
Past that, pascal is rumored to launch soon.

Your GTX970 seems to be fine for your games.
If you will play at 1440P or 4k, then a stronger card will be good for fast action games.

I see no advantage of a Z170 motherboard for sli when there are good single card upgrades available.
Unless you will change to an overclockable "K" processor, then a Z170 will be needed to overclock.

1440P is very demanding. Look at what you're getting. Barely 60FPS in BF4 which isn't very demanding. The GSync is keeping you going since you can't hit 144FPS to take advantage of your monitor. Another 970 in SLI would definitely help as you could take advantage of the extra FPS.

That being said. Pascal is just around the corner. If you can wait a few months I'd do so and get a very good single card. The performance/$ compared to now should be way better. You have the old 970 and the H170 motherboard laying around you could trade in towards a new Pascal.

If you're having a hard time getting over 40FPS in any game you're playing then you could definitely consider another 970. Ride on it for a year or so to give Pascal a chance to release and prices, inventory, and drivers to stabilize. Then sell the H170 board and both video cards for a Pascal. However waiting for Pascal may also mean not requiring a new PSU.
