Entirely new to computers and wanted to build my own, by myself.

Managed to get through it but had a few issues here and there for example the ordeal with my GPU+MOBO.

I had a hard time troubleshooting it since i couldn't get it to work at all in any of the PCIE slots when i got it but now somehow I've managed to make my GPU work in my second PCIE slot

Are there any down sides when using RX 480 4GB + Z170-P + I5-6600K for gaming purposes in having my gpu in the second slot?

Trying to get my first slot to work meanwhile waiting for answers, wish me luck!

Your Z170-P motherboard has 2 PCIe x16 slots on top (1 grey and 1 black) and 2 old PCIe x1 slots (both are black) on the bottom if I'm correct. Use either 2 of the slots on the top (grey or black) they should be longer than the other 2. But overall, you should be fine and there are no downsides! :D
