I am upgrading both my wife's and my computers from Phenom II 965 and FX 8350 to Ryzen 5500. I think that is the best $/performance currently that more than fits our needs. I built my daughter a Ryzen 3600X system a few years back, and it is all the speed we'll need for a long time.

I am looking at a MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX II and 32GB of ram(2x16), not sure what brand/speed yet though. The MB doesn't need to be a "gaming" motherboard, but that one isn't too expensive and looks fairly well reviewed.

Any thoughts? anything stand out as a poor choice there?

Every other component I can use from the old computers, including case. I have an extra, new Corsair CX550M PS for one of them, I might order another, or use one from the old computers. I will keep the same Video cards for now, which are Radeon 7850 and 7870. My wife will never need better, I may upgrade to something better down the road.

Thanks

After a bit more googling, this looks like a good option for ram.

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 32GB (2 x 16GB) 3200
Seems like a plan.
Caution. MB will most probably need a BIOS upgrade.
R5 5500 is not a true Zen3 (5000 series), 5600(X) is better option.
Ryzen uses less power than FX 8350 but if PSU is from Phenom era, you would be better to get new one.

Have you looked i to the present Intel 12th Gen CPU and mobos ?
At this moment, they have a good price / performance ratio, and do not have the potential BIOS / chipset / CPU compatibility problems you have with some AMD chipsets ( if you are not familiar with the problem).
Something like the Intel I5-12100 CPU
EDIT: I mean the i3-12100

Thank you, but I have been an AMD fanboy for a while. I'd prefer to stick with it, even if it is a bit more $.

Nevermind on 5600G, the 5600 is on sale for $139 w/promo code, and the 5600X is on sale for $189 with promo code ($66 off total between the 2) I bought one of each because they were limit of 1.

So I spent less on the 5600 & 5600X than I was looking at for the 2 5600s, and only $43 more than my original 2x 5500 build. I am feeling very good about the timing and getting that deal.

(The sale ends in 1 hour)

Thanks, I looked a little more at B550 MoBos. The GIGABYTE B550 GAMING X V2 is on sale for a few more hours for not much more. And 4.7 review is nice also (FWIW). I may pick that up, and send one of the MSIs back. The MSI is more than good enough for the wife. Or I'll keep the MSI and build my Son a new computer. He is still running a Phenom II as well.

I see the 5600 is a recent releases. Can I install that, and then upgrade the BIOS, or do I need to install the 5600X I bought to upgrade the BIOS? (the 5600X has been out for a while, I assume it wouldn't need a BIOS update)

Thanks again
