First time builder. Historically not much of a gamer since SNES (I’m old) but do want to play some of the newer games that have come out recently. Tried to play Skyrim a few years ago on a cheapy Best Buy desktop with ATI Radeon 3000 integrated graphics but was hardly playable. Could barely get into double digit frame rates on the lowest settings. Still, put like 80 hrs in somehow.

Anyways, current goal is to build a PC that can run 1440 at high frame rates ~50-60 fps on today’s AAA games at ultra/high settings. I know that will be a bit of stretch for some titles until I get the second GPU. Initially have $1200 to spend with about $1000 more over the next 6 months. Most of that $1000 will be for a 2nd GPU and a 1440 monitor. Currently have a 1080p monitor and all other peripherals. Maybe look at 4k in a year or two but not sure that will be feasible with current budget. Planning to OC both CPU and GPUs.

Here’s my proposed build:

My questions and concerns:
Too cheap on the motherboard? Eyeing a Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 as backup for $116. Still not enough? (not sure that is even an upgrade) Anywhere else to get potential savings to upgrade Mobo?

PSU good? I think wattage I am fine but general unfamiliarity with quality and brands on this component makes me nervous.

My main concern is heat/airflow with the eventual dual 390s (and overclocking). It seems they run a bit hot compared to 970s. Debated 970 vs 390 but with an eye towards 1440, the 390s appeared to overtake 970 for same price. Do I need to consider extra case fans or other considerations (i.e. more case venting)?

OS – Just go to 10 for eventual DX12?

Anything else I am overlooking or not thinking about?

Other Notes:
In U.S.
Have a Micro Center 11 miles away

Solution
For 1440p, that is a pretty good setup. The 390 tends to do better, than a GTX 970, at higher resolutions. Definitely take advantage of Microcenter's bundle deals. The 850w PSU might be a bit on the low side, for CF's 390's. I would probably recommend a 1kw EVGA G2, for that one. Motherboard is a THG recommended board, so good there. You can get Mushkin silverline 8gb kit, for less.
