First time build- HD Video/ Gaming

Hey guys,

This is my first build, and I want to have something adequate to edit HD video (with special effects in programs like After Effects) and to play games (COD, Company of Heroes, etc...)

My price range is ~$1200 (not including monitor) . I would prefer to buy all parts from New Egg.

My biggest question now is to go i7 or to get a older Core 2 Quad (or Core 2 Duo)

Ok, I don't need keyboards,speakers, mouse or monitor (going to use 22in widescreen 1600x1050). Im thinking of something like this for my build...

Sorry if image is small. If it isn't too hard I would like to overclock.

What are your thoughts on this system? I would like to purchase within next 2 weeks.

i would more go the i7 for editing

if you want to save money go with a amd p2 955
amd p2 955
790gx am3 board
ram ddr3

The i7 is a lot more money though, and from reviews I'm not to sure if it is enough to justify the price. This is a massive upgrade from what I currently have, so I'm sure I would notice enough of a difference for the extra cost.

fore gaming i7 would only be slightly better than the amd
so what is more important? i7 lower video card/ amd higher video card

the i7 is a better chip and i think would be worth the higher cost fore you
but the 955 would still be pretty good

I think I'm going to keep the Q9550 because when i7 prices go down I can always upgrade. I would rather have a better video card.

are you sure you want to get xp on that machine? you won't be able to use directX10 as it is only available for vista so i recommend getting

i would get SAPPHIRE 100269SR Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Retail(it is 100 bucks less and outperforms the gtx 285 )

the 4890 is not better than the 285 the 275 competes with the 4890

i would not go with the Q9550 the amd p2 is better in this price range and the 775 socket is dead and will not get any new cpus wile the am3 is a new socket and will most likely more cpus so later you can later upgrade the cpu

(+1 for amd p2 i would get amd p2 or intel core i7 well if you took a look here http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-4890,2262-7.html you will find that ati 4890 is just less than the gtx 285 in performance with 2-4 fps so i don't think that the 2 or 4 frames worth 100$ more

anyway here is a verygood i7 build that won't cost you much

it is for 1310-80 mail in rebates=1230$ without a cooler and without shipping but it is an i7

Nope the 4890 competes with the GTX 285 since the standard 4890 runs at 900mhz but they had a load of bad gpu's which couldn't reach 900mhz so sold them as 850mhz processors.

to be honest with you i really have no idea about the thermaltake case and ocz isn't the best brand when it comes about the psu but it is very good,anyway i would suggest getting the antec 900 or COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail with the 650TX corsair
