First Time Build, Non-Gaming...would like some advice/opinions

Looking to build a non-gaming system. This is my first build and will be used primarily for Internet, basic student work (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), and maybe some video editing from time to time.
May also use for some programming tasks (php,Java).


Budget Range: No more than $600 after all rebates applied, shipping, etc. Of course the cheaper the better if it will suit my needs.

Are you buying a monitor: No

Parts to Upgrade: The minimum purchase is a CPU, motherboard, memory,case. Also thinking
of getting an SSD, but not sure I need one. Already have a 1TB WD 7200 hard drive. The PSU I have is a Thermaltake TR2-500 PP. Would like to utilize going forward, unless of course it's not any good. Don't really know.

Do you need to buy OS: Yes...thinking of Windows 8.1 or would 7 be better?

Processor: From what I've read, sounds like Intel I3 or I5 (4th generation) should do the trick, but not sure here. Since I'm not gaming or wishing to overclock, is AMD a better route to go?

Will be back with a build shortly. I will create an intel build as you'll have a better experience overall, however, an AMD build (for the same money) will probably be slightly better in video editing but thats about it.

A couple things.
1. Missing a power supply, this is required.
2. Non K CPU and no GPU in the case creating heat, probably don't need the after market CPU cooler.
3. For Video editing get at least 16G of RAM, that process can really consume RAM.
4. 120 SSD is fine for your boot drive and all but you are going to need some storage space for other things, like the uncompressed videos you will be editing, and example of this is a 30min FFXIV wedding I recorded with FRAPS was 36G, so get something like a WD 1TB Blue.

Your PSU is a Tier 5 unit which means its no good. The 350W seasonic will be more than enough for your PC - it will even be possible to add a graphics card in the future like a 750ti
No need for custom cooler if not overclocking, plus there is not GPU in your system to build heat inside the case - you're fine with stock
Faster ram is better for editing, compiling etc
B85 chipset has some business functions you might find useful
Samsung 840 have some problems and need a firmware update which is a hassle - its been documented on PCPer and other sites

Edit: You can always get another 8 gigs of ram if your editing requires it.

One thing I forgot. I'm also thinking of installing Plex media server so I can stream movies to my TV via a Roku Device. Not sure how this would impact your build.
