Hello, this is my first time building a computer. I feel as though I have done a respectable amount of research, but would like to make sure the system I've put together is well designed. I also welcome any extraneous advise you might have.

I selected parts based on a few criteria:

  • I prefer to spend money now in order to save money in the future, so I tried to find parts that are relatively future-proof, or at least that will allow me to expand my capabilities.

I am fine with spending money on something that lets me get the most from the components. For example, I've read that the GTX 1080 may start ratcheting down the hertz past ~50 degrees C, hence spending more on the hybrid cooling system for the GPU.

I emphasized cooling to decrease any chance heat will decrease a part's lifespan.

Without further ado, this is my parts list so far:

I would drop windows 7 (which is about to be cut from support) for windows 10. Plus, new cpus (and yours is) will only get specific drivers under windows 10 (it will work on windows 7, but it'll work better on W10).

SSD: you don't need the braket, the case you've picked is designed for ssds. So if possible try to find the same ssd without the braket and at a lower price.

The motherboard: it's got the Z170 chipset. That was the chipset used by the 6th gen CPUs, but yours is 7th gen: you can update the BIOS, but if you're new to this, it may be better to just pick the equivalent motherboard from Gigabyte that has the newest Z270 chipset.

You might also want a normal, large size HDD for media storage.

Other than that... nice rig, it's...

That CPU is SLOW for that card, take a 7700k, it has better price/performance and will not bottleneck your GPU. If you don't have money for it, then just take a GTX 1070 instead of the GTX 1080.

Thank you very much! I decided to go with the GA-Z270 Gaming 7 (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813128963). Its a little more pricey, but I think it will be worth it.
