As the title states, it’s my first time building a computer. As one can imagine I made a Mistake. Before placing my motherboard in the case I attached the CPU cooler to the CPU, thermal paste was pre-added and of course I felt the need to remove the CPU cooler to fit the motherboard in the case. Now there’s thermal paste Spread out on both my CPU and CPU cooler. I gathered from the internet that I should remove the thermal paste from my CPU, but I wonder if I should also remove it from the end of my cooler? The parts I’m using are CPU ”Intel core I7 9700k” and CPU cooler ”Asus ROG Ryuo 240”

A FOLLOW UP QUESTION, does it matter what type of new thermal paste I apply? In that case, which do you recommend?

Remove the old thermal paste, using isopropyl alcohol, from the CPU and cooler. Use something lint-free as well.

Arctic Silver 5 tends to get the nod for reliable thermal paste.
