Greetings
I will soon be starting my first build

ASUS Z97PRO wifi
Intel Core i7 4790S
Fractal Define R5
Seasonics platinum 400W
Windows 8.1

I will no be doing much gaming but will be doing photography work, large RAW files and occasionally my wife might need it for HD video editing.
I am totally confused by what RAM I need to get and how much? Thought of starting with 8gb and adding more if needed.
Many thanks for any advice.

Solution
imho you should start w/ 16GB already (2x8GB). Its time for 16GB for power users (photography work, large RAW files, HD video editing etc).

Something like that:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2133 Memory ($125.98 @ Newegg)
Total: $125.98
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

And in a no related issue, look for a stronger PSU for your gaming (550W-650W). You will need that extra power for a good gpu. Seasonics is the perfect brand though.

I like where you were going with this but I would opted for these http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gskill-memory-f32133c9d16gxh G.skill 2133Mhz 2x8GB CAS 9 for $150. The speed with low CAS will go well with your build.
