First time OC'ing - AMD Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition Kuma 2.8GHz

Like the title says this is my first time attempting an OC. I looked at all the stickies but didn't see the information I seek.

It would seem that if there is a bottleneck for most of the applications I use or games I play that it would be the CPU.

Looking to juice up the CPU, where do I go from here?

I am at a novice at OCing, but I did have this same processor except it was a X2 KUMA 7750 BE@3.2GHZ,2.7ghz stock w/ DDR@ 800@900Mhz The bottleneck was the cpu no matter the oc I just couldn't get it to Play games, without a lag. I just went and bought a X4 940 BE 3.0GHz stock no OC It seems to have opened the system up alot no lag. All games play silky smooth on high and very high settings i.e Crysis, I get 42 fps on very high settings now was getting less than 20fps before on high. I don't know if your a gamer. I just assumed it since the high quality video card. I hope this was helpful in solving your problem.

The 7850 is a pain in arse to overclock, the most I have gotten with that chip is 3.2Ghz stable, 3.3Ghz was not stable enough for a bench.

Don't expext much from that cpu, it is a weak agena and does not overclock very far....

Go into the bios and up the multiplier to 15.5, you should be at 3.1Ghz .... Anything over that will require a bump in vcore....

I had the same problem OverClkr with the 7750 BE even with it at 218 On HT Ref. in Bios with 14 multi I believe, anyway I had it clocked to 3.25GHz and it still wasn't up to par. Not in anyway was I contradicting you OverClkr and I hope u do not take offense I was just adding another 2 cent worth.

Jumping to 3.1/3.2 seems like it would still be worth it. Not quite ready to give up on it.

Not a hardcore gamer, playing Dragon Age now.

I guess I see this as a project to learn more about overclocking.

Changing the multiplier is all it would take?

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, as long as you stay at 3.1Ghz, if you decide to go higher give it at least 1.35/1.36v .....

Yeah 3.2 is no problem then using the multi or not, its stable at that speed for sure

My 7750 was always reading 1.38v-1.41v without fooling with any type of overvolt using cool n quiet it went from 1.14v at idle to 1.38v-1.41v on its own

thats because you are using CnQ... If you are going to overclock the CPU you need to disable any power saving features. And I suggest you manually key in the CPU voltage. If you leave it on "AUTO" it will give the CPU more volts than needed making it unstable and hot in some instances.

I appreciate the tip OC did not know that!!! You just saved my CPU from damage I thought something was up since I was supposed to be running 1.35V constant according to AMD OverDrive

Just make sure you monitor your temps using speedfan or Everest. As long as your temps do not exceed 60c you are fine ...

Ok so I tried a little experimenting with AMD Overdrive.

I upped the multiplier incrementally to 15.5 incrementally and couldn't keep it stable. Tried with the voltage at 1.325(Stock) & 1.35.

Had no problems at 15x with 1.325.

What's my next step? Do I just accept that?

I am now realizing that even as I up the target Voltage to 1.35 that the current voltage doesn't move, still at 1.325. Is that something I might need to fix directly from the BIOS?

You can give your chip more voltage, don't keep it at 1.325 if you want a higher clock. As long as your temps stay at a tolerable level a bit more voltage won't hurt.

Yes, do it directly from the Bios. Give the CPU 1.35/1.36v and make sure you have all other voltages correct as well. If all else fails then its most likely as far as it will go.... You should be able to get at least 3.1/3.2Ghz....

I have a 7850 BE and a ASrock 790GX MB, all I had to do was F2 to Bio's and turn the ACC function from Disabled to Auto then run the OC tuner and popped it up to a 15.5 multiply the voltage auto adjusted and it's running stable.


I keep reading about people trying to unlock additional cores on this chip and I don't think that possible?
