I am building a PC and have reproduced a similar issue with two identical model motherboards:
1. Power on outside case: I am able to confirm all the components work via BIOS outside of the case. Every part works swimmingly.
2. Power on inside case: The motherboard shorts (my assumption) and is now inoperable, inside or outside the case. The resulting error in both tries is a red CPU light and orange DRAM light, paired with no BOOT screen. The motherboard is essentially fried at this point.
To make sure that this isn't a connection issue, I did not unplug any components between powering on outside the case and then inside. The only additional action I took was screwing the motherboard into the stand-offs and powering the PC on. The issue still persisted, and the motherboard got fried.
There are no standoffs that are making contact with the motherboard outside of those connected via screws. I am using washers and screws that came with the case.
Hypothesis: The motherboard is making contact with a metal point causing a short when inside the case.
Any direction on solving this mystery (and not frying anymore motherboards) would be greatly appreciated. Please challenge my assumptions if needed and thank you for your time!
