First-time System build...Will it work?

Apr 6, 2009
This is a list of everything I have in mind right now but my budget doesn't really allow me to go much above $1200. I've never built a computer before. I'm about to go off to college and I want a good desktop that I can play games on before I leave and during the short breaks I will have during the school year. I don't think I left anything vital out of the build, but if i have, please point it out because I have only a little experience with computer assembly. Feel free to make suggestions and adjustments, you guys know a lot more about this stuff than I do. I only used TigerDirect, which may or may not have been a good idea, so any help would be appreciated.

SLI - Eventually
Overclocking - If possible, yes.
Video card preference - None really, performance is all I care about.
AMD vs. Intel - Leaning towards AMD because of affordability, but no real preference here either.

Your mobo is not capable of SLI, nor is it necessary at that resolution.

Change the mobo to an AMD 790GX based one.

Change the HDD to Caviar Black 640GB.

Change the PSU to Corsair VX550.

This cpu can be easily o/c to 3.5GHz @ 1333 fsb (10.5 x 333). <=== Pics, specs and customer reviews of the case in this build. <=== Pics, specs, and customer reviews of the mobo in this build. $56.10
