I’m in the planning stages for a personal video editing rig and could use some assistance on component selection for my particular needs. I've read though many of the recent video editing build threads here on TH. They were very helpful, but there weren't many recent builds matching my budget and software usage.

My budget is around 3-4K USD for the system sans peripherals as I already have most of those items on hand. I’m not a professional but I do tend to spend an hour or two daily working with Adobe CS6 products for my business, occasional freelance work for some local businesses and friends, and of course for fun in my own personal projects. The programs I tend to use daily are Premiere Pro, After Effects and a little Photo Shop.

I’m also an avid gamer but that’s secondary on this particular build. In fact, if making allowances for gaming is going to significantly detract from the performance I experience when working with Adobe products then I’ll just keep or upgrade my current gaming PC and maintain two systems.

I just read through the following from Adobe and found it very helpful, but if anyone knows of other suggested reading I’d love to hear about it. “Teach a man to fish” and all that :)
http://www.adobe.com/content/dam/Ad...dfs/adobe-hardware-performance-whitepaper.pdf

The only item I've *mostly* settled on is the Corsair 900D case, because my water cooled gaming rig has been living in an 800D and I've been a big fan of its look, functionality, and having all that room to work with during the build. But I suppose that might be overkill and I know it eats into my budget through so I’m certainly willing go with a less expensive case if that’s what it takes.

Thanks in advance for the help. This will be my sixth or seventh PC build so I’m literate in the process but usually mystified by the nuances of available technology whenever I jump back into the research, and this is my first video editing build so that shift in focus has also come with a bit of a learning curve.

OK, how does this look? (the hard drives will both be in RAID 0 and the GPUs in SLI)

Thanks so much for the reply, PizzaTheHutt. Spaceballs?

I don't have much interest in water cooling this new build, with the possible exception of a self contained CPU cooling units. It was a fun project on my last gaming build but I don't feel the need to do it again.

Yes to the optical drive but no on the wifi adapter as the rig will be sitting in my office about 2 feet from my home router.

I'm headed off the office but I'm looking forward to getting back so I can go through your suggestions. Again, thanks very much.

Solution

Looks amazing, and right on budget. Thanks very much for giving me this launching point.

I've been doing a little more reading about optimizing hard drive configurations for Premiere Pro and After Effects and my brain may have exploded a little, but I think I'm coming around. I came across the following and wondering if at the very least I should shoot for the recommended 3 HD setup.

NOD1.jpg

So after reading the rest of Harm Milliard's excellent guide on adobe specific video editing hard drive configurations I'm considering the following generic setup.

C: 2x SSD's in Raid 0 for OS, Adobe Programs, page file, games, and other programs. 1TB total should be enough for my needs as long as I purge old games from time to time.

D: SSD on the smaller side (256 maybe) for media cache, media database and previews.

E: SSD on the larger side for media and projects

F: 2 x HDD's in Raid 0 for Exports and other general storage

G: 1 x HDD for manual backup of important files, namely source media and rendered exports.

I may be off on my preview placement though. Harm's guide suggests that previews be paired with exports when using a 4 drive setup, but the guide also points out that previews rank second for their need for speed (just under media cache and cache database). To me this suggests that I would benefit from having previews on an SSD, especially since I use them so often. I could always ditch the F: HDD raid array in favor of another SSD to be used for both exports and previews, but I imagine I'm going to want a pretty sizable drive for my exports, and getting another large SSD is going to hammer my preferred budget even further than this proposed configuration.

lol, here's the funny part though... I totally get the logic behind separating functions to different drives because of read/write conflicts, but when it comes to real world performance based on my needs I can only speculate as to how gains will actually be measured in time. So like where am I saving seconds and minutes, and where am I just saving milliseconds? heh

I know I'm already busting my own budget :)

I would use an SSD for exports and the two hdd's for the project files and other media ones - You'll benefit from the extra capacity later for your project files. (Quite honestly, that setup seems a bit of an overkill - maybe go for just one SSD for the program files, and another one for project files. I would then go for two one tb's in raid 0 for exports.). If you really want great performance, use two SSD's in a RAID 0 for scratch and then either a single SSD or HDD's in RAID 0 for everything else :)

EDIT: From my experience, I have found that multiple drives helps to some extent but you will see the performance begin to plateau after about 4 hdds, hence why I left it at two SSds and two HDDs.

Good points, PizzaTheHutt. No doubt on the drive front I'm suffering from a combo of over thinking and overkill. Thanks.

One other question if you don't mind, are there any primary components on your suggested list that you'd opt to upgrade with an increase in budget or would you just keep it as is regardless of additional budgeting headroom. Mobo, memory, whatever.

Oh, and speaking of overkill, Lutfij has managed to talk me down from the 900D. I adore the case but he's right, it just doesn't make sense for a build that I don't plan to WC. So I'm open to open to more reasonable case ideas if anyone has a favorite they're willing to turn me on to. I'm going to go do some research on that front right now.

I just checked out some video reviews of the 750D. Looks amazing and I love the SSD and HDD options. But if I go this route I may as well make use of the space and use a Corsair H110.

Any other suggestions? I'm feeling the urge to make some purchases and start a build!

Well, half of the build parts arrived today.

Unfortunately the 750D wasn't in very good shape and needed to be RMA'd. One of the latches that hold the front panel in place was broken. As a result the panel couldn't sit flat against the front of the case and it generally looked ridiculous. That was the BIG issue, but I also noticed that one of the SSD drive bay holders was cracked at the attachment point, and the front 5.25 panel cover also had a broken plastic connector. Those were minor issues I could have lived with, but that front panel was a deal breaker.

Fortunately Newegg made it very easy to RMA the case and it's already back out the door, but I'm sure I'll still have to wait at least two weeks for a replacement. I see lots of thumb twiddling in my future.

I'm also waiting on my watercooling parts (going with a single custom loop, just CPU for now), and my hard drives.
