I've got an new GPU on the way I wanted put into an old refurbished HP Z800, but I forgot to check for power supply compatibility.

I just watched a review of the Radeon 6600 and it has an 8-pin power socket. So I checked the Z800 specs and sure enough it has two free 6-pin connectors for power. I've got plenty of extra power, I think my PSU is 1100 watts and the GPU uses about 100 watts. But is it possible to adapt the 6-pin connector to the 8-pin on the 6600 GPU.

I'll be getting a new Dell next month so if not it's not a major issue, but I wanted to try the new GPU out on my old system just for fun. If it's too much trouble then I won't bother.

thanks

1100 watts and only having 2 6-pin PCIe connectors tells me it can't be 1100 watts, unless it has proprietary connectors for something else or like a dozen 4-pin Molex and SATA connectors.

In any case, I can't really recommend trying to combine the 6-pin connectors into an 8-pin one. I just don't see how that could safely work.

I'd have no problem with adapting two 6-pin into one 8-pin, especially given RX 6600 only uses 132w so doesn't actually need the 8-pin unless overclocking.
$$1.26 on Aliexpress or $26.99 on Newegg

HP Z800 came with one of three power supplies--850w, 1110w or 1250w. They fail often, are proprietary (size and wiring) and very expensive

I have a HP Z800 in the collection and there were 2 models of power supplies that came with them, the lower one was 700/800 something like that and the bigger one like you and I have. I have used GTX 690 , GTX 780 TI , GTX 970 , GTX 1060 , GTX 1070 , GTX Titan x Pascal with a 6 to 8 adapter no issues.

I bought a second board just to screw around with and bought a power supply adapter so you can use regular power supply of choice. Beast of a computer but dang is she heavy.

I thought I just needed a 1 6-pin to 8-pin adapter, I'm glad I checked here.

Thanks.

It's been a really good PC, when I got it I was told it had 24 GB of RAM which turned out to be 48 GB which has been nice. I'm looking forward to seeing what a much better GPU will do to streaming and frame rates.

I've checked some of the Youtube builds where people put insane amounts of RAM in their Z800s, hundreds of GBs.

But it does weigh a ton.

Guilty here 192GB.s I did it for more proof of concept more than anything else. :p
The most I saw was 512 GB which I don't recall how he did it, because the listed max is 384 GB. He found a work around where he could double up on memory slots somehow.

Not that you need it, but when you get a system like that it's kind of like moding out a muscle car.
