Hi, i use to have a slot 1 celeron 400, the fan of which fitted to the mboard with a yellow ,red, black cable to a 3 pin connector.
I have just bought a celeron fcpga 700 with slocket adapter and the fan is odd.

i.e coming from the fan is a red/black wire and a red wire. this goes into an extender with the red/black wire now becoming a black wire, the red a yellow and then there is a extra black and extra red having no connection to the original 2.

I managed to get it working by chance, removed it and tried again and made a mini fire!!, i saved the board but can anyone help....??? at the moment i have my old fan piggy backed onto the new one (i cannot remove the new one as it is integated with the heatsink )

cheers

You sort of lost me in this description...but I believe the 3-wire cables are to support fan-speed monitoring. Only two wires are actually needed to drive the fan, i.e. 12V and ground. The third wire (I believe the yellow one) varies in voltage depending on the speed of the fan and is monitored by the BIOS.

From your description, it sounds like the fan only has two wires, thus it does not support hardware monitoring. You could just use the previous connector (3-pin) from your old fan and solder the leads together. I believe it should go:

NEW OLD CONNECTOR
Red/Black TO BLACK
Red TO Red

To be on the safe side, post again with a better description first. Are you trying to plug the fan into the motherboard or directly to the Power supply? From what you posted, it sounds like the new fan with the "extender" is meant to connect to the power supply. Is the extender a 4-wire connector? Take a look at some of your free power supply connectors, you may just be able to connect your new fan to one of those.

Good luck and keep me posted!
P.S. BE EXREMELY CAREFUL YOU COULD FRY YOUR MOTHERBOARD! I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY!!!
