Fixing the "Asus Motherboard overclocking failed" error message

From what I have read, it is a well documented issue with Asus motherboards. My PC was working fine until yesterday when I used it to test a graphics card (that was broken) from another pc. I had to cut the power due to no image being displayed. Now, when I turn it on (with the old working gpu) it fails to display an image until I hit reset. Then I get an image but I get the error message:

"Overclocking failed hit F1 to blah blah blah"

If I hit esq from the bios menu without changing anything, Windows loads normally but... when I restart if, it's back to square one - i.e, no image until I reset.

So, please can someone tell me which settings I need to change to make it work properly like it did yesterday?

Please can you elaborate? I am not familiar with "programmer".

To be honest, I haven't updated the motherboard bios for a while. I usually take the "if it ain't broke" approach with updates, given that updates of any sort rarely deliver a noticeable benefit and frequently cause problems (that then requires another update).

If I update the bios, will it just fix any issues with overclocking failiure?
