[FL] Trading between FireRed and LeafGreen

I assume it's true to say that while FireRed and LeafGreen cannot interact
with RS, Coli or Box until the National Dex is unlocked, they CAN interact
with each other. I deduce that this is to prevent you getting any monster
from 152 - 386 before you complete the game retro-style.

Are there any guidelines, therefore, about trading between two FL carts?
What I mean is, if one has the National Dex unlocked, what happens when you
try trading with a cart without the National Dex? Can you only trade
Pokémon 1 - 151? Can you trade at all?

Reason I ask is that I have both FireRed and LeafGreen, but currently only
one GameBoy. I want to play LeafGreen as much as possible, but I want it to
still be possible to trade starters from FireRed without playing the game
all the way through.

Related question: Apart from the choice of three starters, all other
decisions are between two, right? Fossils, the Hitmonguys. I'm hoping that
once I reset after trading Starter Two Of Three to LeafGreen, I won't need
to reset again to get the rest.

Until you get the national pokedex, you can't trade 152+, or any eggs at all
(even if they are of original pokemon). However you can trade the starters
between the 2 cartridges as soon as you get the pokedex (and capture a 2nd
pokemon).

There is one other thing that depends on your starter pokemon. After you
defeat the Elite 4 the first time, one of the legendary cat-dogs starts
running around. Of course if you have Colosseum, you already have all 3. But
it never hurts to have more.

I understand this much, but what happens if one cart has unlocked the
National Pokédex and the other cart hasn't? Will the cart with the full Dex
be able to trade with the other AT ALL?

Yes, my friend at work has his NPD, but I have only just beaten Lt. Surge.
He and I traded back and forth just fine, and (since I work at a game store)
he and I both have taken a third copy and traded in the starters.

If you try to trade in a Poke from the National dex before you are updated -
you get 'this pokemon cannot be traded at this time' but all pokes in the
local dex work fine.
