Flash bios on GTX 970.

Hi,

Like quite a few people it seems, I've been having problems with the displayport on my gtx 970 - the machine refuses to boot properly if a cable is attached, but it runs fine if it's switched in afterwards. After much toing and froing with Gigabyte they have sent me a new video bios to see if that will fix things. The problem is that the gtx has two bios to update and the instructions they've given me are a bit confusing to me. According to the readme file they sent with the bios I have to flash the first bios with DVI to DP Mode (whatever that is) using the card's DVI-I port and then flash the other with DD mode using the DVI-D port.
The two problems I'm having with this are that I don't know what DP or DD mode mean (I imagine dp refers to DisplayPort but I'm not sure, and I don't know what dp mode is) and I don't have any DVI cables. My monitor is a 4k Samsung UD590 and it has no DVI or VGA ports, only HDMI and displayport.
So I guess my questions are - What is DP mode? Is it just connecting to the cable to that port? Do I have to use some kind of DVI cable even though my monitor doesn't support them? And if not do I have to switch between HDMI and displayport when flashing the bios?
I've attached the readme file which Gigabyte sent me, in case there's something obvious I'm missing.
readme

thanks a lot

No, I've no real idea either but right now you're doing the right thing: Asking.
Do NOT attempt to flash the BIOS until you're totally sure about how to proceed, if you don't get a reply that makes sense here either send off to Gigabyte asking for detailed instructions or start a RMA stating that the display port is not working correctly.
Actually, they've quite some cheek anyway, it's like asking someone to fix their own new TV or microwave!

seems like to me they should exchange the card to the one that really works as you did expect it to do to start with .. not dump a vbios on you and hand you all the risk of a bricked card if it all goes wrong
[opinion]

To be fair to Gigabyte, I specifically asked for the bios because Nvidia recommended it on their forum. There are lots of people with exactly, or very similar, problems. Nobody is quite sure what the cause is but I don't think the card is defective, there just seems to be some conflict being caused by the GTX 9 series, perhaps with motherboards or something else. I have requested more detailed information from Gigabyte but I suppose if it doesn't measure up I'll have to return the card. I would have had no problem flashing a normal bios but this double bios thing has stumped me really. Thanks for the answers.

well that's the thing you flash and it fails and they washed there hands of it

you say '' don't think the card is defective'' but you state '' There are lots of people with exactly, or very similar, problems.'' plus all the rest ??

well its your card money and all and all you can do is what you fell is best

$350+ it better be ready and work 100% out of its box .. but that's just me

any way good luck

Mine are up and running and so far it's all good, I'm not trying to use the Display port though.

Yeah, I'll see what Gigabyte say and probably return it, although I've had it a month. Pity, it works fine otherwise.

I decided to RMA the card. It will take 30 days! Great. I'm worried now that they'll check the card and find nothing wrong with it and just give it back to me.

they could ???? never know until you got it back or hear from them on it ...

I guess they [all] were in such a big hurry to make them to be out for X-mas things got hurried up and goofed [opinion]

don't they test these things anymore and seen this issue at the start ?? and look at all the 970 threads .. [more opinion]

good luck and let us know how the rma went

Considering the 970 was available several months before Xmas I don't know how you come to the conclusion that they were rushing anything, as mine worked straight out of the box and have no coil whine either I am of the opinion that most of those 970 threads are from AMD fans just out trolling! IMO.

September is several months before December, take a look at a calender if you don't believe me and I have no reason to defend my purchase but you do seem to turn up on every 970 thread saying how bad they are and how you are waiting for an AMD card. That says a lot IMO.

So I received a reply from Gigabyte which clarifies things a little but I'm still confused. If I can get a little more clarification I'll try to flash the bios before an RMA on Monday. This is Gigabyte's reply

I'm still not sure entirely what DD bios is.
Does this mean I can flash just one of the bios, presumably the DP one?
What do they mean by connect to the displayport and flash later? What do I do before flashing it?

As always, any help will be much appreciated.

I've been searching for ages but I can't figure out what they mean by dp and dd bios. I thought dp might be displayport but their picture highlights the dvi-d port, which is for analogue if I'm not mistaken. So I really don't know what they mean. I have obtained a dvi cable however, and a displayport adaptor so I reckon I can follow their instructions anyway.

Further information if anybody is interested.

I attached a dvi cable to the monitor using a dvi/displayport adaptor. I could get no signal to the screen, even though the machine seemed to boot up fine. I have a feeling it may have been my mistake though. Are there different adaptors for attaching to the monitor and the card or is the same adaptor good for both functions?

I intended to buy a new displayport cable to see if that might be the problem but the shop accidentally sold me a displayport/hdmi cable so I tried that. The computer booted up fine but the maximum resolution was now capped at 1920 x 1080, ie way lower than 4k. So no good.

I'm still trying to figure out if I can update the bios on the card using either a hdmi or displayport cable. As I can't boot with the display port cable, I can only do it with hdmi (Gigabyte's instructions say turn on the machine with the connection already plugged in). There is only one hdmi socket on the card and it falls into the part they label dp bios. So how do I flash the other bios? Which one is the one I need?

My last option is to get the proper displayport cable tomorrow and see if that works and after that I'm done. Back to the shop with it on Monday. I'm getting very fed up with it now.

Final update. I hit on the bright idea of digging out my previous monitor - a 17" Philips lcd that has served perfectly for about 10 years - and hooking it up to the dvi ports of the gtx 970 in order to flash the new bios. But I could get no signal from either of the dvi ports on the card, nothing, nada, zilch. The monitor came on fine (I was using it full time just over a month ago) but just said no signal. I tried both dvi ports and tried rebooting etc but nothing. So unless I'm missing something I guess that's it, it must be a faulty card, not an incompatibility issue or anything else (I suppose) - there's no choice but RMA.

Just got an ASUS 970 to replace the Gigabyte card and so far it seems to be working fine, no problems with the displayport.
